Philadelphia-based brothers Adam and Jason are the creative minds behind Deckstools, a unique stool design that uses recycled skateboard decks. I wanted to run this post in May; however, the stools have proven to be so popular that this is the first time since spring there have been any stools in stock. I also thought this would make a great back-to-school post. (Can't you just see these in a dorm room?)

The Deckstool design evolved out of trying to make use of snapped skateboard decks. Typically about 1/4 of the board might get snapped out from use, so Jason, an industrial designer, worked to make use of the other 3/4's of the deck. He eventually found an attractive and durable design.

About 90% of the boards are supplied by skateboarders. The rest come from factory seconds of imperfect or warped decks that would normally be thrown out. I love the idea of finding a second life for an otherwise very durable material. Jason and Adam also use water-based finishes exclusively and work to make their shop as efficient as possible.
