Be they preppy or classic, rugby or jailhouse, stripes have an "I walk the line" sort of boldness about them. Horizontal stripes add width and vertical stripes add height, but they both add drama even in small doses. Stripes usually appear in fabrics for upholstery and window coverings, but when stripes are used in art and accessories they seem fresh again.

Austin artist Ashley O'Brian creates custom stripe paintings using five paint colors from a room's color scheme. She began the stripe paintings by experimenting with the concept of randomness and the human need to place order on apparent disorder. Friends were so impressed by the paintings that Ashley began taking custom orders. You can order your own striped canvas by contacting Ashley at aobrian@grandecom.net (prices are reasonable but vary based on canvas size.) It's a great way to add graphic punch and coordinated color to a room.

Pillows are always an easy way to add interest and pattern, and these stripe patterns are not totally expected. The FOLD pillow is made from strips of wool flannel and comes in three other colors.

We love these sassy clocks, especially the striking Arlecchino clock made from strips of Murano glass. Because it's pricey, we found another clock that is just as fun for a much smaller price tag.
Stripe Clock by Chroma Lab $45
Stripe Glass Arlecchino Clock by Pascal Tarabay $318

Horizontal colorful stripes are found in lighting from drum shade pendants to these table lamps. The affordable Ikea cylinder lamp adds casual whimsy to a room while the Isabel Stanley lamp brings sophistication.

Large Ribbon Striped Lamp by Isabel Stanley Design $92 (approx.)

A striped rug can bring an entire room together or provide a starting point for a color palette. We love Flor for their endless choices and versatility, and were delighted to see this new stripe rug kit in juicy colors (at a realistic price point.) Though in our fantasy land, we covet this Gandia Blasco rug which reminds us of a cozy wool sweater.
All Wrapped Up 7x11 Rug Kit by Flor $434
Magnas Rectangular 6x8 Rug by Gandia Blasco $2910

Of course, stripes can accent the walls through wallpaper or painted stripes. But if you want a simpler option or a less permanent one, try stripe wall decals instead.
Wallcandy Pink Stripe Wall Decals $44
Scribble Paint Stripes Wall Decals $49

What is your say on stripes? Love them or loathe them? What is the best way to use stripes when decorating?
