The closet door is unfortunately one of those parts of renting an apartment for which we usually accept defeat. Since they are expensive to replace, we just make due with what's already there, whether we like it or not.
The truth is that making small changes to closet doors can do wonders to heighten the mood and intimacy of a room. Some great ideas are applying wallpaper or fabric, chalkboard paint, stenciled designs, murals, moldings, unique hardware, or any combination of the above. These are also sneaky ways to introduce bold choices into a space without committing them to massive expanses of wall. Because doors have architectural borders, they provide natural edges at which applications can be stopped.

These photos are gorgeous, and each one unique. Anyone could imitate these ideas. Actually, closet doors aren't that expensive to replace if they are standard size.

I wish I seen this post before I took my doors down.
I have the most hideous hollow-core bi-fold doors in existence. When I went to try to replace the hardware, one knob revealed a massive hold in the 'wood.' I actually just got done hyper-organizing the closet contents (like in the 6th picture) so I might just take them off.
Great ideas! You can also apply this concept to smaller storage spaces (cabinets/armoires). Fabric is great, but for a quick fix, you could use decorative papers to line the interior side of doors with glass inserts.
For those who don't have or prefer doors, just do an attractive drapery treatment. It defines the space, separating closet from the rest of the room, allows you to conceal contents by simply closing the drapes, and can give you a "walk-in closet" sense if the space allows you to hang them a few feet in front of the actual closet.

That's a great idea for those awful, dreadful mirror closets. I HATE THOSE THINGS, so ugly.
Cool ideas!
Love that chalkboard one. I've always wondered what that sort of thing would look like in person. I suppose the trick is to have enough black in the kitchen already to make the look work. It always seems to pop in pics.
I've always wanted to put that woods wallpaper inside a closet - just in case it helps me find Narnia in there.
