Oh dear. According to Kitchen Myths and Ask a Scientist, that old box of baking soda most of us have in our fridges doesn't actually work that well at eliminating odors.
Lucky for us, AT:LA recently wrote about deodorizing your fridge with two other basic household items: Coffee Beans and Vanilla.
Thanks, Gregory, for filling us in!

My nose disagrees... I find baking soda to be quite effective.
SPAM ALERT!
Also, wanted to add with baking soda, it doesn't have an indefinite usage life. So it's not like you can open a box of baking soda, leave it in the fridge and expect it to be working equally well 3 years after the fact. I think it's something like 3 months actually. I DO find that when I chuck my coffee grinds into the garbage bin, it does smell less. Or maybe the coffee smells just sort of invade my nostrils and crowds out every other smell.
