Square Feet:
What I Love About My Small Home:
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what I love about my apartment. I just love it - I say goodbye to it when I leave in the morning! I suppose more specifically, I love that it is a place where my friends like to be; I love the enormous amount of natural light it gets; I love the hardwood floors; and I love that I have a host of sparrows nesting outside my window – they make such a happy noise.
Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space:
Storage. I landed my apartment sight unseen from four states away after weeks of fruitless searching. Moving in, my first reaction was that it was small (and this despite having lived in a Parisian apartment the size of my closet). I have a lot of stuff. A LOT. And somehow I manage to accumulate even more stuff on a ridiculously frequent basis (largely thanks to the Georgetown Flea Market). So the first challenge has been finding homes for all of it. When my apartment begins to look like a used furniture store, I get ruthless and purge the house of its clutter. Inevitably, this leads to my second challenge, which is restraint (still working on that one). Oh, and budget. Apparently, I’d rather have a vintage Alvar Aalto stool than eat for a week. Go figure.
