- What I Love About My Small Home:
- It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what I love about my apartment. I just love it - I say goodbye to it when I leave in the morning! I suppose more specifically, I love that it is a place where my friends like to be; I love the enormous amount of natural light it gets; I love the hardwood floors; and I love that I have a host of sparrows nesting outside my window – they make such a happy noise.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Storage. I landed my apartment sight unseen from four states away after weeks of fruitless searching. Moving in, my first reaction was that it was small (and this despite having lived in a Parisian apartment the size of my closet). I have a lot of stuff. A LOT. And somehow I manage to accumulate even more stuff on a ridiculously frequent basis (largely thanks to the Georgetown Flea Market). So the first challenge has been finding homes for all of it. When my apartment begins to look like a used furniture store, I get ruthless and purge the house of its clutter. Inevitably, this leads to my second challenge, which is restraint (still working on that one). Oh, and budget. Apparently, I’d rather have a vintage Alvar Aalto stool than eat for a week. Go figure.

AT, can you encourage submitters to include a small source list for things like paint? I LOVE that bedroom paint color.
Good to see D.C. represented! Is that a curtain made of buttons?
Love what you've done!
I think you've done a wonderful job of separating the various spaces. Would've liked to see the closet area, though. It looks like it was supposed to be a bedroom and takes up a surprising amount of real estate for such a small apartment. Just curious why you need such a large closet.
Is the curtain made out of campaign buttons? or any buttons for that matter....I love it! did you do it yourself of purchase premade?
Inspiring!
I absolutely love your bookshelves as a separator between your living area and your bedroom, and what I find most ingenious is that you also have the identical bookshelves in the bedroom, it is so colorful and architecturally interesting in such a tiny place.. Bravo you have created a beautiful home for yourself, I feel good just visiting it.

@Keira - The amount of space seems to say it is supposed to be a bedroom rather than a closet, but it's much smaller than the space the submitter created and much less awkward with the slanted door space. I would have done it this way as well.
Couldn't get to the favourite button fast enough. I want your clutter, gorgeous. Well done!
Its actually a lamp (in the loose sense of the word) made out of snapple caps -- a project started by my sister and finished by me! It has christmas lights hanging on the inside... We used to drink A LOT of snapple.
Also, I thought about making the closet into a bedroom, but a full-sized bed wouldn't fit (and allow anyone to move around). Having been forced to have a twin-sized bed overseas, I was dying to be able to spread out a bit. Also... I have a ton of clothes and shoes. It is a little pathetic.
Oh, and finally, the bedroom paint color is called 'Rainstorm' by Sherwin Williams.
Adorable. I've always loved small spaces and this one shows just how clever they can be--given the right tenant.
love the Ikat prints. And that rug is gorgeous.
Your home is so cosy and nice!
That is a LOT of stuff in 300 square feet, yet it looks great! And organized! Well done.
As someone who lived in DC for many years before moving to NYC (and in a 285sf studio), I love it! I don't know which 'hood this is in, but it's definitely one of DC's many older, beautiful buildings, with those floors and the high ceilings.
LOVE the political buttons and the gorgeous console/desk, and the contrast of bright red rug, white walls, and dark blue bedroom area. (That desk chair can't be too comfortable, though...?)
I feel you on the bed. I can't even fit a queen into my space, but at 5'8 and a grown woman no way will I go back to a twin.
Oh, snapple caps!! There goes the myth that everyone in DC is a political paraphernalia collector. :)
Love what you have done with your space.
Something about your bookshelves is so cool! I love how you've arranged the books. You've got talent.
Next time your in NY, will you help me with my apartment? Your looks just great!! Good job!!

Happy to see an apartment in DC! You have done an excellent job with the place, especially the shelving unit. I also love all the colors you've incorporated especially the walls. Good luck!
@Keira -isn't asking a female why she needs a lot of closet space like asking a computer nerd why he needs more than 1 GB storage on his computer? Answer is obvious. You must have a very limited wardrobe.
From the first glance I had a smile on my face...just love it!
Love the little white sofa and the kitchen area. Looks like there are lots of cabinet space for a small kitchen. There is a lot of "stuff," - a little too much cluttered in areas, but very neatly maintained, nontheless.
at first glance, this unit presents a visual cacophony, but it grows on you. I think I would love to visit, but I'm not sure about living there. Still, a remarkable home.
I just realized part of what makes this apartment work so well - you have windows turning the corner (so, on two sides). Thus you have windows for the bedroom and living area both. It makes even more of a difference in such a small space!
Love love love the textured bedspread and the bookshelf screen! Great job!
i really love your apartment!! would you please come decorate for me??!! wow--you've got talent!
Amazingly creative; fun, cozy and colorful. The definition between the spaces makes the apartment feel so much bigger than 312 sq. ft. It makes me happy!
Just way too much clutter for my preference!
Glorious, glorious maximalism! You embraced the space, stuffed it with your treasures, and painted it a jewelbox hue. So many other people in that size of space would've gone minimal-- I love the abandon of this.
Cute, but there is a bit too much clutter for my tastes. Seems like every surface is covered in something.
Love it. Gets my vote. ;)
I agree with BFERGIE13 and Suzy8Track . . . WAY TOO MUCH STUFF in such a small space.
love IT
I love how you've divided the space, that dark blue wall in the bedroom, and how although you do have a lot of stuff it's all very neat so I think it looks full but just short of cluttered. I also love how you say goodbye to your place every morning when you leave! (I sometimes do that to my place too)
I DO have way too much stuff. And while I actually would prefer to be more minimalist, there are a few extenuating circumstances that have left me with a bunch of things I can't (for sentimental reasons) get rid of. My mother and I have recently had to go through both my father's and my sister's worldly possessions, and neither of us have any storage space to speak of. But we are just not ready to let go of some of it. So I have had that challenge as well. In any event, I'd rather have too much that reminds me of them than nothing.
But I still do have an acquisition problem. I'm not sure the pictures do my apartment justice, though, because when you're actually there, it doesn't feel cluttered.
I prefer clean, spare lines. Too much clutter here for my taste.
I love all the "clutter," if you want to call it that. It gives the place personality and makes things more interesting and cozier. Great apartment! I would love to see the closet too.
Even though there does seem to be too much "stuff," it's still my favorite small space so far. You still managed to keep it looking organized. Oh, and I absolutely LOVE your bedding...where is it from?
Please, please tell me that the duck on your bedroom table is a lamp! I have one that's very similar, and I love it (much to the chagrin of my boyfriend)! I've never seen another, though...Wherever did you find it?
soooo much stuff. how can you cook without knocking everything over on that sofa table?
As much as I dislike wall-mounted TVs, this was clearly a space where it would have been beneficial. The TV is much too large to be placed on that desk.
The 'stuff' doesn't bother me. Either you're a stuff person or you're not. Seeing some of the homes in this contest over the years some left me wondering if anyone actually lived there.
I'd rather see real places like this than impossibly immaculate architect's apartments that leave me feeling cold.
I absolutely love the button curtain. The only things I would change about this place are the stuff on the very top of the bookcase, if removed I think the room would feel a lot more open and put more space in between your frame clusters, maybe about 2-3" space in between each frame and it would make the walls seem larger.
Good Luck!
Can I ask how you attached the 1x5 expedit to the 5x5? Or did you simply stack it on the top? I am interested in doing this.
This place is cute. What some might view as clutter, I would view as lived in. Of course, this is coming from someone who struggles with 'clutter", LOL. Love the bed area wall color, the rug and the color of the cover at the end of the bed.
Love! You have my vote (-:
While this isn't my style, I love this place because it just OOZES personality. My god! What a beautiful apartment!
Definite favourite- LOVE everything about this place! (especially the 'damask' pattern pillow on Bertoia chair and Louis XV seat cover- what's the fabric?)
i feel like i would constantly knock things over in this space.
LOLLYPUP - the fabric is an Ikat that I bought at Calico Corners.
GOOGERBER - The bookshelves are just stacked. At first, I worried that it wasn't stable enough, but with all the heavy art books on it, even the earthquake last year didn't move it.
This is lovely! You've got some really nice design pieces. The desk, the rug, and the Eames rocker in particular. I can tell every piece has been carefully selected. None of it random.
Great. I have the same size apt, but, without the giant closet, and with windows on only one side and it sure does not look this good! Plus it is carpeted and so while I would like to have a divider such as this, I can't do it.
But, where do you keep your files and officey stuff? These things are always hidden in these tours and I have the hardest time trying to figure out where to keep them all - I have quite a bit, I guess, since I have several 'issues' to keep track of.
Loved your art collection. And the blue in the bedroom. You've made your footage work wonders.
It's wonderful to be surrounded by things you love, with special meaning for you. Clutter is in the eye of the beholder. I don't see any here. The place looks full of love. Great job.
Very cool! Is that an Ikea Expedit shelf you're using as a room divider?
Love this - inspiring!
I dont know how you can complain about storage with a closet like that! I would KILL for a closet!!
If I lived in an apartment, this is just how I would like it to look! Beautiful colors, homey clutter and comfortable. Good luck in the contest!
very lovely, full of style, color and interesting details
Love the bed sheets .... where did you get that from?
What deRaismes has done with her apartment is nothing short of miraculous! She has taken a "postage stamp" and turned it into a visually spacious, comfortable environment. What I especially love is her incorporation of cherished childhood objects and pictures with new found treasures. Her space is truly warm and inviting and so well done!
The Mother Goose lamp! Well, I'm not sure if that's what they're officially called- but that's what everyone in my family calls them. Everyone has one- my great grandmother started buying them at this store in Santa Fe called Doodlet's (a store for people who are bored with 'clean lines' and a lack of clutter). Since then, every family member has had one, its a weird family tradition, not passed down but repetitively bought. Mine is in storage... But this inspires me to bring it out.
Like this one a lot! It looks like there is actually someone living in this small apartment! Most of the other entries look kind of "sterile" and right out of a magazine. This one's got a lot of congeniality!
I love the pattern on the bedspread.
The space is both functional and whimsical, not an easy feat!
you've got some really great pieces in there and i love those old bedspreads.
love the way you live - things all out, you kinda know where to get what, livin it to the max, and yet having spaces (so you dont feel overwhelmed, cluttered...)
