Name: Derek Anthony
Location: Los Feliz - Silverlake Border — Los Angeles, California
Size: 900 square feet — 2 bedrooms
Years lived in: 8 — rented (I'm the Manager)
The last time we saw Derek, he was in full mid century swing with bright colors, playful shapes and plenty of kitsch (in a good way). But a change has taken place — Derek decided to go disco. The palette has narrowed to red, black and chrome and everything is a bit more sleek and sexy.
Though plenty of mid century touches abound in the form of a striking red vinyl dinette set, avocado accents in the kitchen and great atomic bedroom, the mainstay of the apartment has definitely shifted. The living room greets you with a black wall covered in reflections — chrome, lights, mirrors. Everything is pared down, has simpler lines and a lot more contrast. From the mirrored bar, the Panton chair, the bold red love seat that looks like it's straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey to the mirrored late seventies model portraits, you feel as though you stepped into a time warp and you just might be entering Studio 54.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Very cool! I'm particularly jealous of the I Dream of Jeannie bottle in the living room!
The lighting! Stunning.
The lighting pieces are incredible!! I love all the clocks, too.
I love the graphic pop of the black wall. Not only does it showcase the decorative items beautifull, it's a perfect way to integrate the 21st-century TV!
I was going to comment on the I DREAM OF JEANNIE bottle too. You others beat me to it. But Derek, my family just sold a Florida condo which has an avocado electric stove plus oven above, if you want me to get you in touch with the broker before the new owners trash it.
"it's a perfect way to integrate the 21st-century TV"
Totally. When I first saw that pic, I thought, "Now this is the way you 'disguise' the television". Hidden in plain sight.
Elizabeth, I'd love an avocado stove but shipping from Florida would cost a fortune, I better get one locally.
I think my aunt had that avocado green dish drain when I was a kid in the 70s.
Congrats on putting together a beautiful apartment/study in 70s decor. I love the sculptural piece in the bedrm and have a special place in my heart for vintage appliances; not only are they so cool looking but they certainly are workhorses aren't they? I'm currently lurking after a vintage blender that looks exactly like yours but haven't taken the plunge yet. I also think your collection displays are amazing - the soda cans, awesome!
Love your space. Great use of color and the vintage elements are lovely. Gorgeous kitty too!
Am I alone in thinking it's too much like stage-design?
@ Mookie
Well, Derek passed (understandably) on the avocado stove from Florida, but my dad's house in DC area has that blender you seek if you're more local (beige/yellow-ish color).
You had me at "Disco". What great stuff!
What a great place, you are right on when you say if you don't want to go out. Love the kitty also.
Fun place, beautiful kitty. I'm pretty sure we had that blender when I was a kid!
Thanks everyone. The blender was an ebay find, New in the box never used from Grants Dept Store, was probably an unused wedding gift. My Siamese cat Newmar is an attention w****e but my male Russian Blue "Necco" is camera shy!
I love your bedding! And that black wall is awesome.
Great home.....love the colors, the sparkle, the sleek textures and lines. Very cool and classic. I covet your sliding-door cabinet with the green/blue painted doors; awesome!
Nice collection of everything from one period. Suppose that takes effort. Is anyone else tired of one style decorating be it mid-century or later? Looks more like a period room...
Yes I know this is not for everyone but 30 years of vintage collecting is hard to break, I really can't do anything current. I've tried, plus seeing Ikea stuff in thrift stores that is only 5 years old is kind of a testament as to how things are made now.
i'm not feeling a "disco" vibe, but this place is pretty A+.
I'm sorry to be the party pooper, but I don't like it.
The problem lies squarely with the architecture. This apartment is horrible - a drab, pinched, cheaply-built little box with low ceilings and cramped rooms. No fault of Derek's, of course, but nevertheless true. This ugly architecture was disguised by the exuberance of the old atomic/kitsch decor, but fill it with glam/disco design, which is all about sleek perfection, shine, luxury and hedonism, and the two clash worse than Steven Rubell and Billy Graham.
Haha...I agree when this building was built (1957) it was probably filled with a cheap pole lamp and a vinyl daybed sofa.
I just wanted to open the door and go wow! I was only in High School during Studio 54's heyday and I didn't pay attention to the high end stuff at the time I was into atomic 50's then. But, when I start looking at 80's Nagel Prints and Black Laquered Korean Hostess bar furniture, I put a gun to my head. Haha
This place is so cool and fun! The kitchen's combination of bright red and avocado green is really unexpected and jarring (in a good way). The vintage space-age white tv is super groovy.. that would make me happy every time I looked at it.
I love the mosaic-looking clock on the bathroom wall. What a great collection of stuff! So unique. I hope you have lots of parties there and crank up the disco!
I really enjoy reading and seeing posts like this one. It shows that creativity and design enthusiasm are still alive ... it's not one the scores of posts that all look like they aspire to imitate Ikea or DWR catalogue showrooms.
I find the negative comments by "Blandwagon" so typical of an increasing number of people here: "cheaply-built little box with low ceilings and cramped room." This describes how much of how Americans live. Despite these limitations, Derek has taken this common space and created a living space that is incredibly unique and inspiring, regardless if it's anyone's particular personal style. He is clearly in control of the space, and his attention to detail is meticulous!
Perfection!!! I love everything about it. I also love that he rents. I rent and it's SO INSPIRING to see others who rent and care about their space as much as they would if they were homeowners. What a great home to feature!!!
Those hanging table lamps. A++, sir! They're simply FANTASTIC!
"Low ceilings"? They look like standard 8' to me, hard to find anything taller in apartments or houses apart from antique homes (not a lot of those out there) or in McMansions.
I'm not fond of retro, but this place looks fun and colorful and nicely put together...
I want to know if that green and gold starburst wall piece is authentic or if it has been enhanced?? (I have never seen a similar one, but I like it a lot!)
Nice bicycles, pity about the space.
I love this. I think it's just delicious. Those hanging side tables are to be lived for. And the paint job on the bedside table is so nice with the wall piece in the bedroom.
I also like the trend toward showing the inhabitants of the spaces, by the way.
The hanging swag table lamps I found in an Antique Mall in Burlingame near San Francisco. The Starburst sculpture over the bed is from about 1962 or so. I got that years ago on Melrose Ave.
The ceilings are probably 8 or 9 feet. I have lots of windows and I am in the front upstairs unit so I have windows on 2 sides so it really doesn't feel cramped. The area is great so it makes up for not owning and being the manager I am saving money.
Thanks for all the nice comments, even if not my taste when looking at other's places I try to find something nice to say. I appreciate other's letting us peek at their living spaces.
Derek
I forgot the green painted credenza came from Revival Furniture near the St. Vincent De Paul Thrift store around Ave 22 or so not far from Downtown LA.
WHERE did you get that toaster???????
*drool*
I love everything about it, the toaster, the starbust over the bed, the end table/lights by the sofa. The kitchen accessories are perfect. Avocado green works as long as the whole kitchen isn't avocado green!
Ha! Soooo rad. Your home made my imagination go berserk!! That is a rarity, thank you for sharing your home.
i too love the jeanie lamp! :D
Groovy!!!
@SusanGee: I love those old Sunbeam toasters too. You just missed one on eBay! $104. Yikes! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=360335426064&si=z2uvCNQ0O%252By1STY8gzTuWhYtHHc%253D&viewitem=#ht_500wt_1156
Rats!!
But thanks OrdinaryBoy!
I HAVE THAT TOASTER! It was my family's when I was a kid...it doesn't work any more (unless you count smoking when plugged in "working"), so I have it displayed on top of my cabinets with other vintage treasures. I also know I saw it in a home goods display at the National Museum of American History once.
Great place...I have some lamps and light fixtures that could be friends of yours.
Thank you for this great posting. 3 Day Blinds is proud to see our window treatments featured in this project.
I actually got the toaster on ebay. I just sold it for 151.00 and got another avocado green Hostess circa 1970 that fits even better.
The bedrooom is undergoing a change now from green to powder blue. I've had the bedroom green for a few years now so it's overdue for me.
Cute Derek...I love the final pic! Your kitty is definitely the diva of the house. My female cat does the same thing...following guests from room to room.
I love the little pitcher collection in the white wall boxes! Also, I think it's so funny how we had to spell things out in the 70's as if people didn't know (ICE, SALT, PEPPER, etc) Maybe it was all that late night dancing ;o)
Derek- marry me!!
But seriously, love both looks. Most of all, love your collections.
Gag, sorry. So sick of seeing this style over and over and over ad infinitum. Plus I'll bet the kitty hair is fun on the dark grey rug. Derek definitely has an eye for the period, I'll give him that. There's a job title for it too: set decorator. Let's move on.
Well, in another year it might be back to the 60's, I just get off with change. I do agree the 70's has a more upscale look the 60's was more fun and kitschy. I like both, I am just a swap meet addict and love buying & selling.
My other cat Necco is camera shy, he is a beautiful Russian Blue, the Siamese well she is an attention w***e
Derek, I really admire your unfailing graciousness in the face of some hard criticism (and even a few mean-spirited jabs). I personally preferred your place in its previous incarnation, but this new look is very well put together. I really love that you are a collector at heart. :)
Is that an Angela Adams rug in the bedroom? I love black walls and 70's style. Everything is great although I liked your previous look. So now you have black carpet in a rental? Did you pay to install that? Did you make the squarish looking mod hanging mobile type thing. I would love to know how you did that if you did indeed make it. Love the George Nelson clock in the bedroom. I like the bucket that says "Ice". I usually hate kitchen cabinets in apartments but with red and green they actually don't look bad. Did you paint the countertop in your kitchen?
The "I Dream of Jeannie" bottle, green stackable canisters, that orange clock and mmmm the tri-level chrome and glass coffee table, would love to live with me also, lol, (when you want to redecorate again, obviously). Love your style, both ways, keep true to you. Happy New Year, 2012
