The Arts & Crafts movement was a response to the Industrial Revolution in Britain, when quality and conditions of the decorative arts suffered because of the move towards industrial production. Heralded by artist and writer William Morris and inspired by the writings of John Ruskin, the style focused on medieval and traditional craftsmanship, and was influential from the 1860s to the 1930s. In America, the style was popularized by Gustav Stickley, where it became the basis for Craftsman houses and Mission furniture.
