• What: Boulder, Colorado Apartment Therapy Design Evening • Who: Kristin FitzGerrell with Studio 22 • When: Wednesday, March 16 at 6pm > • Where: Design Within Reach | 2049 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado 80302 • Organizer: Ali DeJohn • Attendance: 35 Kicking off a series of creative conversations, local assemblage artist, Kristin FitzGerrell of Studio22 will pull you up by your scrappy bootstraps and inspire you to share what you love about the process and the passion of living creative lives.
SUMMARY: Wednesday night kicked off our brand new series of creative conversations in Boulder. An awesome speaker, a fabulous new home at Design within Reach for our Apartment Therapy Design Evenings, super silly icebreaker nametags (i.e. if you build ________, it will come) and a gathering of over 35 creative souls — I have to say it was a pretty exciting night! Kristin's talk centered around living a creative life — taking risks, building your creative community, remembering to be a kid again and play (which really hit home from me with the Makerie being right around the corner!), and the fun and power of collaboration. She is living her creative dream and inspired us all to do the same. The whole idea behind this series is to build a community of creatives that can share their passions, ideas and inspiration. We are really excited for Boulder to embrace this idea and can't wait to continue the creative conversations! Read more on Ali's blog: The Makerie | We Were Inspired.

SUMMARY: St. Louis kicked off its first Apartment Therapy Design Evening with a bang. With an enthusiastic crowd, a stunning space and a couple of interesting speakers, it was an evening we won’t soon forget. We had a good sized crowd with many local designers, students and design enthusiasts in attendance. After helping themselves to Centro Modern Furnishing’s designer punch, created by area mixologist Ted Kilgore, the crowd settled in for an enjoyable evening. At 6:45 p.m., Centro owner Todd Lannom introduced the evening’s speakers, Maryville University Senior Joshua Kan and Architect Phil Durham of Studio/Durham. First, Joshua Kan showed us his plans for a concrete coffee table he designed. Next, we learned about Phil Durham and discovered his passion for custom made-furniture, a passion that he has developed into something of an art form over the years. Having worked with David Oakey of InterfaceFLOR in LaGrange, Georgia, Durham shared some of the custom designs he developed for their workspace. In addition, he showed us many of the unique projects he completed in his own home/studio workspace. Durham then took questions from the group. We had a lively discussion on the future of design in St. Louis, the direction it is headed in the Midwest and what we can do as a city to take our game to the next level. The last order of business was to announce the next Design Evening. It will take place at Niche Home Furnishings on April 19, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. as part of Saint Louis Design Week.

She writes the popular design and lifestyle blog, Pure Style Home, chronicling daily life as a wife, mother & designer, and has been featured in publications such as Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, the Washington Post and the Washingtonian. Lauren has recently launched a new line of furniture and textiles which embody her classic yet fresh “pure style” aesthetic and are available through Pure Style Home. She’s thrilled to have been selected to design a room in this year’s DC Design House for Children’s Hospital.
