This week was the opening of the 15th Annual Design Indaba conference and expo in Cape Town, South Africa. The show has exploded in size and popularity since its inception in 1994, and it is now the leading platform for creative industries in the southern hemisphere.
Sold out for the past five years — this year is no different with its all-star list of speakers from around the world, including: the Bouroullec Brothers, Bruce Nussbaum, Gary Hustwit, Li Edelkoort, Martha Stewart, Tord Boontje and Michael Beirut.
At the Design Indaba Expo, furniture designer Haldane Martin (who's home we featured last year) will be introducing his brand new Baba Papa lounger. The lounger is inspired by smooth water-worn pebbles and is made from 80% recycled stainless steel wire loops welded together to create an organically contoured diamond meshed surface.
The expo proudly boasts no imports or derivatives and showcases the work of over 260 local exhibitors from the fields of advertising, architecture, craft, film, fashion, product design and more. The Indaba is the only local platform of its size on the continent and it's very exciting to see such a wonderful celebration of South African design. The Design Indaba Expo hosted more than 29,000 visitors, 260 exhibitors and 350 buyers in 2009 and it is now considered as one of the world's leading design events — definitely not to be missed next year!
