When I stumbled upon the Jeff Jones Tobacco Stick Chandelier made of reclaimed barn wood, cotton, plastic, and steel, the hanging fixture caught my eye.
Mixing rustic elements with bright colors to create contrast may be not be a new concept, but I can appreciate the reclaimed materials and the creative way that the piece is assembled. I was, however, a bit surprised when I saw the price.

When I saw that it was going for nearly $1300.00 at Anthropologie, it made me wonder: would you pay designer prices for something you could DIY? Does knowing it was designed by an artist / architect / designer justify the price?

Based on the last few posts from Apartment Therapy that have popped into my reader ... I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone today. And I have nothing nice to say about this fixture, except that my kid could make an accurate reproduction of, so I will say goodbye.
It doesn't even have a sense of presence or intriguing structure that a statement light fixture should. It is a metaphorical (and nearly literal) wet noodle of a design. The same contrasting materials could be used in so many better and more impressive ways!
I am speechless at what people do with their money.
The Emperor has no clothes once again.
Holy crap. This is really sad.
I have the same comments as I did for the Super Bowl Cupcake....
1) Ick!
2) Just because one can doesn't mean one should!

Looks like well photographed craftfail.
It will certainly make me think twice about buying things sourced by buyers at Anthropologie . . .
Looks like complete junk.
Stupid & pointless. Also, aesthetically bankrupt, vastly overpriced and just plain crap.
To answer the questions posed in the article...
1.) No. And who would DIY this monstrosity anyway?
2.) Seldom. Only if it's something you're planning on keeping for years and you're familiar enough with the name to know that it's built to last forever.
For the record, everybody, this chandelier looks a little better on the designer's website. I can imagine it hanging in some snooty, trendy cafe that charges $9 for a latte so they can afford their designer-junk decor.
The super lameness of this. . . whatever has already been covered, but thanks ducibella for cluing me into anthroparodie, now my day is going to be even less productive. :)
Surely this a joke!
Not a worthy AT post..whats going on over there these days?
I agree w/ NIONON re: the super bowl cupcake. YUCK!!!!
Would I pay designer prices for something I could DIY?
No, of course not, silly.
Funny, Dulcibella! I just discovered anthroparodie yesterday.
Yes, the whole trend of adding decorative junk to your living space has come full circle. Next, people will be paying $10K to have a garbage truck dump trash directly into their homes. They will then invite their friends over to be jealous of their amazing "finds".
Hee heeeheee. Just reading these responses has me giggling. Coming from VT, Particleman, some of the best "finds" are found in piles in people's yards! And tain't no Anthropologie, or anything else, anywhere near by.... sooooo yeah, DIY everything. Usually it looks better than this, by far! You know those nice, "restoration" enameled light fixtures everyone likes in their kitchens? Up here, we call 'em "heat lamps" and use them for baby chickens, ducks, turkeys, lambs, piglets, and struggling baby plants for the veggie garden. Lightbulbs on a string? We call that "barn lighting".... or the unfinished kid's room. ;-D
awful
OK. I'm going to be the only voice of craziness here. I like it. I like the color, the wood, the exposed bulbs. Would I ever pay $1300 for it? No. Would I pay $400? No , but I'm still glad someone is making sort of odd sort of ugly stuff that gives me good ideas for making my own sort of odd sort of ugly stuff...even if my odd stuff is free and comes from behind someones garage.
I actually don't really care if it was 1300.00 or 1.30, it really isn't in any way an aesthetic I'd find appealing. It looks like (at best) the inner workings of a lamp or one that's been stripped. At worst, pretentious waste.
Beautiful fixture. Ridiculous price.
DDAL. Don't do at all.
fail of epic proportions
@gypsymomma--
That was VERY funny!
Not my flavor but hey folks, no need to be mean.
@JKMP I actually like this too!! I agree I would never pay for it when I can easily DIY something similar but I think it's cool looking and different!!
