The Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women & Children, located near downtown Los Angeles, provides a home for disadvantaged women while helping them get back on their feet. Earlier this year, designers Vanessa Kogevinas and Vanessa de Vargas organized the Good Shepherd Charity Design project, with a goal of re-decorating 30 of the shelter's rooms.
They brought together a team of 30 designers, who, working entirely pro bono, with donated materials, managed to complete the project in 3 months. The results are breathtaking, and a testament to the talent and generosity of the decorators involved. As Irene Lovett, one of the designers involved, says: "Everyone deserves to live beautifully".
For more information, check out the The Good Shepherd Charity Design Project Blog and Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women & Children's site. You can also read about the project in this month's Adore Home (page 113) and on

White Enamel Four-P...
Where do I find (or how to I make) the curtain treatment in the gold bedroom?
Thank you for this story about GIVING.
Beautiful work designers!
What a great post. Thank you. And thank you to the designers for creating such havens - and sharing them here.
Not mention that these are done on a budget --a reminder that good design and, more importantly, giving big don't require massigve wads o' cash.
I love the idea that these rooms provide not only shelter but a place to feel special, not institutional.
I love the work and how it will give some bit of comfort to women and children in need of a clean and safe place to stay.
Thank you Nancy for the post, we super appreciate it.
This project took over 6 months to organize and complete and the designers ALL worked so hard to create each of these beautiful spaces. As you can see the dedication and the love shows through out these rooms.
We want to continue to give back so if anyone works or knows of a facility that needs some TLC, please contact me directly. www.turquoise-la.com.
BTW, more press is coming out so please be on the look out at our GS blog listed above.
Thanks again Nancy!
These rooms are so beautiful as are the designers who gave their talent and labor to improve the lives of women who have lost so much. I'm simply awestruck.
I love love love the rooms!
Such wonderful rooms! I work just down the street from here. If you're ever in the neighborhood, you can support the ladies of GSC by visiting The Village Kitchen. It's a little bistro connected to the complex where they provide job training. Their soups of the day are always delicious :)
I'm stunned. This is absolutely incredible. Well done team! I'm sure NYC could use some help.
What a fantastic project! We AT-ers, even us amateurs, should look for or organize similar initiatives in other locales. I could see myself donating one room at a shelter near me, with some lead time at my favorite flea markets, etc. My results might not be as awesome, but I suspect would be better than what they have now.) Now on my "check into this" list for January!
