I'd seriously consider a wall mounted or pendant light with a small desk. Positioned correctly, they would be the best option.

I miss Artemide's Tolomeo lamp- it a chic versatile lamp with a modern twist that fits to many places. When desk space is limited consider a bigger Tolomeo to be put on the floor reaching up till your desk. I have a similiar arrangement in my bedroom as my nightstand is really small and it works out well.
I'm with @lepidoptry for the clamp-on idea! There are some fabulous designs out there that occupy much less space than a desk lamp!
