Plan for New Living Room Lighting?

Good Questions

Q: We are first time home owners and first time remodelers. The electrician needs to know what I want to do in the existing living room. We are doing a full rewiring, removing the old K&T wires. Currently, the living room  is set up for all sconces, but I think it makes it very difficult to decorate the walls, especially the main wall where the couch is going to go:

I don't know if I should get rid of all the sconces, put a surface mount on the ceiling, use only lamps to light the room, etc... we are way over budget remodeling the kitchen and bathroom and would like a simple solution if possible. It's a 1940s San Francisco marina-style house, and I would also like to avoid recessed lights in the living room.

Could you please help us?
