- What I Love About My Small Home:
- First, sunlight: I'm lucky to have four large windows which give me both northern and southern exposures.
Second, exposed brick. It warms up the cozy space and gives it character.
Third, pink walls. Pink is my neutral; it goes with everything! As a wall color, it makes my space feel happy and calm.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Obvious answer: Storage. I have only one closet (in the kitchen), so I built shelving above the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Plus, I have hidden storage everywhere--even inside my sofa.

I'm not a huge fan of pink in such quantities, but really like the vibe of your space...
Love the brick. LOVE the pink! You have a great little place, very attractive and functional; good use of space.
Cute! I'm not usually a pink lover, but I quite like it in your space.
AT, I can't describe how great/crucial the floor plans are for these Small Cool entries! They really set the stage for how to use space efficiently. Could you extend this feature into the regular apartment tours?
If I were 30 years younger, and single, this would be my place! Enjoy pink before you end up in a relationship where a man says, "Pink?? Hell no!"
I am another person who normally doesn't like pink walls, but in this case it looks really great with the brick! It looks like a neutral! Also, how awesome to have windows on both sides of your apartment. And finally, I want to steal the boston terrier pictures from your kitchen.
Love the choice of dog!! Bostons are my favorite, so I had to love this apt. The pale pink works. Love the green in the kitchen too.
Funny how everyone notice the pink...I noticed the bright green in the kitchen and think it's super cool. Nice design and very nice layout. I like how you incorporated your dresser and vanity into the livingroom..out of necessity, I'm sure, but still pretty cool.
Very nice place. Your use of the green in your kitchen-dining space is absolutely...perfect.
LOVE your place, especially the kitchen area. Interesting how they put toilet in a separate room from the shower. I am jealous of your brick walls.
I love the exposed brick walls and wooden floor. As a guy I also have to say I love the pink walls, it is quite calming.
You're drawing is almost as sweet as the pink walls. There should be a separate category for adorable drawings. A noble attempt :)
I didn't even notice the pink at first, only the green. That said, I like the green. I'm not a huge fan of pink in large doses, but it works for your space, especially because you've got the brick to break it up. I appreciate how well done it is!
@MJS7640 - that's a funny, but kind of sad comment. I think you should be able to use pink in a way that won't draw any kind of hardline "hell no!" from a spouse or partner and still satisfy having pink. If you wanted to paint everything pink, though, I think most people would understand the "hell no!" but there is no room in any relationship for one person to have ultimate say in anything.
I would love to know where I can get that green knife block. Green is my kitchen color too!
Brown and pink is a favorite of mine. Very nicely done!
I need to know why the fireplace in the kitchen is full of books and hiding behind a dining table.
@LemonDrop - the easy explanation is that her apartment is only 325 square feet and it was either have a fireplace or have a place for two people to eat. The fireplace just seems to be unnecessary in such a small space.
@LEMONDROP, it could be because that's the only space for a dining table in the apartment, judging from the floorplan.
I'm not a fan of pink. Well, actually, I'm pretty anti-pink, but it adds a softness to this apartment. Very nice, and very jealous of the exposed brick!
i'm sorry... but even the trim and doors are painted pink! i'll all for color, even pink in large quantites... but doors and trim too!?!
I also didn't notice the pink, but the shade of green really stood out. =) and, I am so envy of your brick wall!! Good job!!
Love the brick, love the floors!
Sigh...this just made me miss my exposed brick and hardwood floors that I used to have when I lived in NYC. Good job! And I think this shade of pink is so soft and subtle that it doesn't really have an age limit. It compliments the brown wonderfully.
Super cute!!
Love it!
(Plus your pooch? Too cute!!)
Thanks for the explanation... although fireplace > eating, especially when you have one as beautiful as that!
This is my favorite so far! The kitchen is just wonderful.
I LOVE your apartment! It has a very relaxing vibe. And I have officially fallen in love with your dog ;-)
LOVE LOVE LOVE the exposed brick and hardwood floors! The green accents in the kitchen are chic. The soft pink walls juxtaposed with the cool exposed brick makes for a lovely design. Impressive use of your space for a 325 sq ft apartment!
Diana,
Good idea painting the woodwork and doors the same color (pink),
any other color in contrast would only break up the room...all one color doesn't cause distraction. Pink is beautiful, very good glow color for a woman, soft and yes also neutral. I loved the whole concept, very
functional and still very cool...it's got a "New York State of Mind"
Love the green - matches my livingroom. Very cute and stylish for such a small place.
My favorite!
Great job!
@pi
Oh, not so sad...he gives in to a lot of my "are you kidding me????", which is one reason we've been married for 30 years and still really, really, like to be together.
I've managed to get in my share of "pink" by virtue of our 3 daughters. Even our dog wears a pink collar. This is a guy who can braid hair, get a proper bow in a ponytail, doesn't complain about being "sent" to the drugstore, and tears up at the sight of one of them in a prom dress or graduation gown. No big deal that he doesn't want me to paint the living room pink.
What a good vibe....
Your color scheme is great and calming. The pink & brown works well as does the green. You carefully designed it all. The bonus though is your cutie dog! Good luck to you.
Your kitchen is amazing! I just love how you used green
Love the green accents in the kitchen.
I've never been a fan of pink and brown together. I've also never liked using pops of the same color over and over. But in this apartment it looks cheerful and cozy. So maybe I should rethink some of my 'rules'.
The brick is amazing! I adore the kitchen table and chairs, I would love to get my hands on that yellowish table with the radio on it. I love this space, so much personality! Cute dog, too!!
Oh how I LOVE this beautiful space! I'm getting tons of inspiration -- I want to incorporate green touches in our future home too, as well as use prints and color to make modern-style furniture feel warm and inviting the way you've done! I sooo wish I could have pink walls too, but the hubs is not on board. Ah, well! ^_^
I love the layout of your home. And I think your hand-drawn floor-plan is the best!
Oh, I would love this without those pink walls. It started out so wonderfully with the exposed brick + greenery.
Oooooh, what are those green chairs? Want want want!
That kitchen is EPIC!
Hey everyone,
Thank you so much for all of your interest and feedback! Here are some responses to your comments:
RE: THE KITCHEN
@GRAPEVINE: No theft is necessary, I assure you! I got those paint-by-numbers Boston Terrier paintings on eBay 10 years ago (Sidenote: I used to be obsessed with paint-by-numbers paintings, and I have a bunch more in storage thanks to that phase). I bet you can still find some on eBay or elsewhere on the internets.
In fact, the lime green/chartreuse scheme of my kitchen, upon which so many of you have so kindly complimented, was dictated by these paintings. They were the first items I bought when I moved into this apartment (I was in love with Boston Terriers, and planned to get one someday; I did, 3 years later--my precious George). Everything else in the kitchen was acquired after, to match. For example...
@EMILYB: I picked up those green chairs in a flea market a couple of months after I got the paintings, for $30. I have no idea where they came from, it was one of those moments of divine flea market luck.
@RANDIMICHELLE: That knife block used to be plain wood--I painted it green. There are a few things in the kitchen that I painted to go with my green/black/white color scheme.
@LEMONDROP: I agree, it is a shame I had to cover up my non-working fireplace. If my apartment had a different layout and/or more space, I would fill it with candles and use it like a fireplace. Alas, given the layout of my apartment, I felt the best use of the space was to go for an eat-in-kitchen, a rarity in my East Village neighborhood, and then make use of the empty space for book storage. Thanks to @PI and @MISSMEEX for anticipating my explanation.
RE: THE PINK
I love that my apartment has ignited discussion on the merits of pink walls! I totally understand that they are not for everyone, but as a single chick who hopes to someday domesticate with a dude, I had to seize my opportunity to put my favorite color on my walls (I'm with you, @MJS7640).
@MKONAR: As @ROBEACH remarked, painting the doors and doorframes pink was necessary; with my first pink paint job, I kept the trim white and it visually broke up the space. In 325 square feet, you need to paint everything the same color so it all fades into the background and tricks your eyes into think the space is bigger than it is.
Thanks again, everyone! I truly appreciate the feedback.
Love your colors!
I'm a pink girl, so I'm LOVING this.
Adorable! Loved the green kitchen and the pink walls.
This is Small Cool. love it, creative and colourful.
Awesome house. I love the exposed brick!
This apartment is THE BEST. You totally deserve to win this contest, girl!
I love your home! Super creative and cozy. Great job!
Colorful and cheerful with lots of personality!
The kitchen is adorable!! You get a vote from me.
I am green with envy for your kitchen.
I love the exposed brick and your decorating. The pink may have been better as just a single accent wall-- it's a bit much for me.
@DIANASCOPE: understand why you did what you did but i completely disagree that EVERYTHING needs to be painted the same color in a space of 325 square feet. maybe its the pink as a neutral concept but there are plenty of teeny-tiny entries that counter that statement. even my tiny studio (which is 330 square feet when you count my outdoor space) has three walls painted grey, one accent wall of color and white trim -- nothing about those varying colors make it feel small.
oh well, to each their own! good luck!
@MKONAR: yeah, we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. I truly dislike the other teeny-tiny entries with multiple different wall and trim colors going on. À chacun son goût...
I used to draw up a similar floor plan to show where I wanted stuff whenever I moved, and people would kind of laugh at me for being too detailed. I still think it helps to show color in the layout!
I never thought about pale pink with brick, but it just seems to cast a little pink over the brick. Nice use of color!
i hate the pink but LOVE the kitchen alone enough to vote for it :)
Diana, thanks so much for the compliment. your place is so charming and you made such great use of the space. and obviously....love your boston too! But fear not, Malissa's tumbleweed house is going to beat us all. and i thought i had a small place...
I would never think to paint my walls pink as I'm not super crazy about it, but I love the way this looks! The color palette is unique and awesome!
You've inspired me to start searching for chihuahua paint-by-numbers! I love that you used these paintings to inspire your decor choice, which I LOVE!!! Great job!!
Seeing your exposed brick apartment took me right back to my old east village apartment, but that's not the reason I love-love-love your place! It is creative and cool without being too designery, and it hit me with a such a good feeling that I favorited it right away. I adore your color choices (as you can tell by my moniker, lime is a favorite color of mine) and artwork (especially the Boston T paint-by-numbers). I can relate to your excitement over finding those green chairs at a flea market! All in all, I love the creative way you put everything together. And your hand-drawn & colored floor plan is just the cutest thing. I hope you and George win!
@aqualime: Thanks so much for the super-sweet compliments! I've been getting so much pink hate (yet that purple rabbit hole is getting tons of acclaim(?)--go fig!), and watching apartment after apartment jump ahead of me in votes, that your compliments are a real shot in the arm. Thanks so much for getting what George and I are putting out there--a happy home that was slowly built with a super low budget over 12 years from flea markets, craigslist (second-hand ikea!), ebay, and cheap internet finds. There is nothing from Design Within Reach in the place.
P.S. Speaking of favorite colors and your moniker: the scheme of my off-camera water closet is a super pale acqua/turquoise. It would have been included if it weren't for that pesky 5-photo limit....
Diana - you are a girl after my own heart. Over the years I have collected pieces of furniture and artwork from all the same places you mentioned. Happily, my husband shares my aesthetic and our "tiny" is filled with much of my own (and some of his) treasures from those years, along with 'new' things we have found together from the usual haunts. We wanted to enter Small Cool this year, but we just moved into our place in February and it's still coming together. One of these days, though.
Maybe you should try hanging a paint-by-number of your dream dude on your wall -- if it worked for finding George...
p.s. My 2 favorite colors are Jamaican Aqua and Limelight, but I also love pink! What is the name of your pink? It's terrific.
Marc and I--from across the hall--just "favorited" your aparment and are putting in a formal request to come see the place in person before you make it to the finals. Your apartment is fantastic and we are intrigued how the layout compares to ours. It's like everyone in this building has his/her own unique space and it's so interesting to see what we do with what we've got.
Congrats on all of the great feedback and votes so far and best wishes on the contest!
XO, Dina
@DINALOVE2369: Thanks so much Dina! Of course, come on over some night this week! Your place looks awesome when I've had a peek so I wanna see your place too!
xoxo, Diana
AQUALIME - I hope to see your "tiny" in Small Cool 2013!
As for the dream dude--I may have found him (without a paint-by-numbers), but like your place it's still coming together...;). In an ideal world he and I will be entering 2013 or 2014's Small Cool in a bigger category (and probably without pink walls, but I'll live).
Speaking of which, the name is Benjamin Moore "Voile Pink 2000-70."
Thanks again for all your support!
Love the pillows and covers for the bed.
I just moved into a huge Victorian, first floor. It has everything (working fireplace, high ceilings to showcase my art, and an updated + huge bathroom). What it doesn't have is an actual kitchen....just a galley strip of sink, stove, fridge and 60's metal cabinets...all in a row along one wall. I thought it was tiny, and have been working on it for weeks.
Your kitchen was inspiration...as a New Yorker, of course you have a kitchen space even smaller, but you managed to make it absolutely fantastic!
Thank you..................and that green is good.
