What I Love About My Small Home:
Without a doubt, the light! During the day the light flooding in from our crickety old windows is just gorgeous, filling the main living area of our studio and making our space feel brighter and happier on even the foggiest of days. Also, the view...we really do have an enviable view of Hayes Valley to the west for miles and miles which is something our cats appreciate as well. I also love the original character details of our 1920s apartment. After living in the standard fare of boxy, beige apartments my whole adult life, the charming details such as original hardwood floors, moldings, period french doors, and even the noisy radiators make our little studio feel more like a true home.
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space:
1) Don't be afraid to be dramatic. Everything doesn't have to be of a diminutive scale just because you live in a shoebox. Mix scales, sizes and patterns to create some interest. Add that ginormous conversation starter of an art piece if possible or that funky oversized light fixture. It can make a true impact on your once safe space.
2) Be clever with storage. I found my old postal mail organizer on Craigslist and to this day it has been the most versatile piece and has worn many hats. It currently houses my shoes nicely but it has previously been used as a bookshelf and wine rack.
3) If you live in an open space such as a studio, I highly recommend maintaining cohesion by sticking to a unified color palette, the same window coverings, as well as general style throughout. This will help create a sense of flow and seamlessness to your space and, in turn, make your home feel roomier and more balanced.
