As more and more companies join the market, e-readers seem to be the wave of the future. Though existing e-reader options do allow users to read magazines, they can't come close to the experience Bonnier is promising in this concept video.
Bonnier is already in the magazine business (it bought several titles including Popular Science and Field and Stream from Time in 2007), and this concept e-reader definitely benefits from that experience in the field. The loss of so many shelter magazines in the last 2 years has highlighted the economic challenges of traditional magazine publishing, challenges that could possibly be overcome by developments in e-reader technology. Bonnier is looking for feedback on its blog or on Twitter if you have thoughts to share.
Though we're not sure anything can truly replace the joy of flipping through a glossy magazine filled with wonderful pictures, the prototype in the video seems to come close. It certainly looks more enjoyable/natural tha attempting to read a magazine on the web. We would love to hear what our readers have to say about whether or not this (or similar devices) might help save the magazine industry.
