Q: I just bought my first house and am in the midst of trying to furnish it… all of it. I have so much more space than I used to that it feels like I'm starting from scratch! To that end, I snagged a dining table off of Craigslist. I *love* the chairs that the original owners paired with it (table and chairs both seen in the picture). They are West Elm twisted woven chairs, I believe, but they're no longer available. Do any of you lovely readers know where I might find similar chairs? I'll need 8… and since I'm furnishing a whole house, keeping costs down is key.

I'm also open to totally new suggestions for what sorts of chairs I should use. I have a very heavily wooded (and old, built in 1900!) house, with dark hardwoods and dark wood trim, so I need to keep the chairs pretty light to balance out the table/floors. For reference, here is a picture looking into the dining room from the living room in the early stages of moving in. Obviously that comically small table is on its way out, and the dining room itself is much larger than it looks from there.
Thanks! I know you guys will come up with something brilliant!

Sprout Side Table
You scored!! Very nice table and chairs. I don't have an alternative but I caution you to slow down. Sounds like you are trying to pull this together quickly. Take things slow and if you have an empty room..it's okay. I did the same and pieces one at a time and slowly so you don't end up with a garage filled with furniture you don't want. Good Luck.
Oh, I think Ikea may have something like these.
It's easy to find knock-offs of the Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs. They have the woven seats, an airy yet earthy modern look and come in natural and painted colors. I've seen them on ebay, Overstock, and Amazon. Also saw some at HomeGoods but let them get away, which I still regret. The table is gorgeous!
This seems like a very easy DIY! Have you thought about asking a carpenter to make the chair frame for you (if you don't have access to any tools) then weave the chairs yourself! That's what I'd do.

How about these from Ballard? http://www.ballarddesigns.com/simone-wicker-chairs---set-of-2/chairs/dining-chairs/14273?defattrib=&defattribvalue=&listIndex=8
Good luck furnishing and decorating your new home! I've been in mine for 10 months and I'm still only about half done. ;)
That's a beautiful table! A carpenter will cost an arm and a leg. Does it have to be the same wicker type material? I would suggest something that coordinates with the architecture of your place.

If you have a young child in the house, how do you clean the food/juice spill between these woven pad? Just a thought.
It sort of depends what style you are going for, since that (beautiful) table is pretty transitional. I agree, a lighter colored chair is key, have you thought about a simple upholstered chair? Like this? I really love those leather ones, the pattern complements the arts and crafts style of your dining room. The first ones are a softer look, might balance things out well.
Anyway, nice score!
The table looks like it came from World Market; I remember seeing something similar there a few years ago.
I dont' know what your budget is, but these chairs have a similar look to the ones in the original owner's photo. http://www.worldmarket.com/product/kaya-woven-dining-chair-set-of-2.do?page=2&from=fn
i have a different take on this small area. mainly it will be about pushing things to the wall. i have to see the walls, though. feel free to reply:)
Great table! To balance out the heaviness feeling that dark wood invokes and for a practical solution I suggest using a modern classic chair like the Eames Eiffel side chair available through Room & Board, Herman Miller, Design Within Reach and other retailers that sell for around $350 each that come in nine different colors. These chairs will hold their value so when and if you ever want to upgrade to a more formal looking chair you'll be able to sell the Eames chairs and recover a good percentage of what you spent: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=6861&catalog=filter&menuCatalog=room&menuCategory=197&menuSubcategory=1583.
Good luck!
In the meanwhile, while searching for matching chairs, if you end up with 2 chairs that look different, just put them on the ends of the table and it will look like you non-matched on purpose. After all, these days things don't all have to match. You could use chairs with arms on the ends if you want. Or not. I don't think it matters anymore.
The other thing is, probably your friends come in different sizes and shapes too. It might be good to have a chair or two that is sturdier, or taller, for example. The main thing is to be happy when you have people over! ; >
Everyone has their own style, and I am no design expert, BUT . . . my choice would be to mix and match chairs, perhaps with some colors, perhaps some older or wood with modern--orange or blue (or both). I know this style might not be for everyone. I've mixed up some of the grey and blue chairs from CB2, viewable here: http://www.cb2.com/dining-chairs-barstools/furniture/1 , along with some old schoolhouse chairs. Most important: go with what you love. :) Have fun designing your new home!
Looks like a very interesting place & agree, take your time in getting things done.
I know this isn't really what you asked, but I think your older home and earthy table would look great with very modern, sleek chairs. AT has been featuring photos of "mixed" rooms lately -- even today, with the Panton chair-- and the contrast is fabulous. Or even something modern-transitional, like these very inexpensive chairs that are evocative of Japanese design:

Imagine that rich orange against your woodwork!
ok, this isn't a suggestion, just a comment - i had one of those west elm woven chairs (used as a desk chair) and it was ridiculously uncomfortable!! it looked so good that i kept it for a while, but i finally gave it away because it was really horrible. great to look at, but not to sit in! not surprised they don't sell it anymore... i'm sure whatever you find will be more comfy!
I also like the idea of a modern chair with that table like this one - eek from Walmart of all places - it also comes in red:

Here are some other less expensive options:

@Deco, thanks for that insight -- I was wondering the same thing. It's a shame not every beautiful design is also practical. Comfort would come ahead of "coolness" for me.
whatever the chair, be careful about the scale, incl width of seats. when not used, they look better evenly tucked under the table, when used, people do not want to clack into the chairs next to them. that said, the earlier posts, esp the tall-backed linen (w/stain repellent, we hope) ones from c&b, seem nicer than potato chip chairs.
I'm definitely considering making the two end chairs a different style, thanks!
Thanks everyone! I know that I need to slow down a little bit, but I would still like to get the downstairs fairly together for company, even if the upstairs stays less furnished for a while.
The links are very helpful and I REALLY appreciate that no one went after my unfinished living room (or the cords in the corner... which have been properly stored since the photo was taken).
This isn't a budget suggestion, but if you want something with twisted-rope seats to invest in for the long haul, another option would be Niels Moller chairs.
http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture_search.php?i_creator=Moller
My folks bought theirs in the 60s, and they're still kicking, having had the rope seats replaced once.
We had chairs like that when I was a kid, and they were so uncomfortable. If you were wearing shorts or a skirt, the weave would become indented in the back of your legs and it was not fun. Hopefully you find something different! The pic just brought back memories ;) good luck in your search!
