With the landscape outside beginning to bloom, we thought we should share this lovely project that brings some greenery indoors. Perfect for people with small spaces, this DIY air plant chandelier is a low cost, low maintenance way to bring some life to any empty corner of your home.
With nothing more than a few air plants, glass candle holders, linen thread, and ingenuity, Renee created this lovely plant hanger that is completely customizable depending on the space involved. We love how organic the entire installation feels, and Renee certainly makes it seem easy enough to create and maintain this living design element.

Love this! I always want to steal air plants from my parents' yard in Miami...this is a great way to display them.
I cannot wait to make this... where to put it is the question? I love low maintenance/maintenance free plants in my house. Although I am still at a loss for where to buy air plants... does anyone know where I can get them in LA?

This is fantastic!! Love love love, thanks for sharing! And liek Alison, I'm wondering where to buy air plants. But not in LA, in Toronto.
You can purchase air plants at The Juicy Leaf on Abbot Kinney in Venice.
@nomadchicky: I know I've seen them around the city in the past, though I can't remember where. Maybe at one of the many little convenience stores along Queen that sell flowers and plants?
i love this idea! i bought way too many of these at once and was wondering what i was going to do with the extras. unfortunately, i don't have much natural light in my house. do you know if they can survive without much? also, i am a little nervous about having to take them out each week to water them (i always seem to forget to water plants!). any other ideas for what to fill these with?
I am SO making this over the weekend!!! Thanks for the post.
Hi! Thanks so much for posting a link to my tutorial! To answer a few questions: several etsy sellers have airplants if you're up for ordering over the internet. Also more nurseries are carrying them as their popularity shifts from kitsch to chic. Ask if they have any "air plants", "epiphytes", or "tillandsias." A good nursery should be able to help you.
Also, if you're afraid to make the investment and then have them die on you, mosses would be another great option. There are some mosses that simply go dormant when they don't get enough water but spring back to life when they do. Mosses would also just require spritzing, rather than taking them out and bathing them. Again, I would recommend a nursery to help you pick the right kinds, of course a walk in the woods to gather some moss would be a lot cheaper and if they don't make it long-term you haven't lost any money on it.
Hey group, Im the owner of The Juicy Leaf on Abbot Kinney in Venice CA. I sell airplant kits online. Go to http://www.thejuicyleaf.com to view the kits and order yours today.

Someone should always be trying to get rid of spider-plant babies on CL - they're insidious! I'm not sure they're the same, but they should work too.
I've been thinking of doing something like this with orchids and pale green glass net floats, to hang in my (in process) renovated bathroom. I have to find someone to punch a hole in them, but the jute net webs would be worth it.
Where do you get these? I've been googling them and want to try growing them myself on fun types of props!!
If anyone wants to send me them, let me know!

Spider plants are not epiphytes (air plants) like Tillandsia are FAILJOLESFAIL, but you can get epiphytic orchids- since you mentioned those. We are experimenting with them, here at Appalachian Tropicals, growing them in shells in our greenhouse and on wood. There are so many fun things you can do with epiphytes!

Great article, love the idea. Another great place to get ideas and purchases plants, kits, and supplies is Air Plant Design Studio. They have quality plants and a very modern feel. I have purchased air plants from them several times and have learned a lot about taking care of them from their websites as well. Definitely a website to check out!
