It seems like every family we knew had a piece of furniture like this for the television set. Not exactly something you're hoping to inherit; or is it? Jump below to see the incredibly creative transformation of this television cabinet.

It's an efficient all-in-one kitchen. Very cozy. And the window clad in gingham is too cute. Click on over to Design Sponge for more details.

I am Sick. To. Death. of these play kitchen posts. Not everyone has the real estate to devote to one of these, nor the carpentry skills to create one, nor the kids of play-kitchen ages. I'm all for giving new life to these archaic TV cabinets, but for the love of pete, can we PLEASE have a play kitchen moratorium for a while? Maybe someone could refashion old furniture into, I don't know, storage? Art stations? Bookshelves? Anything that's not a play kitchen?
it's really great.
@Daffodil. I'm with you. I love these things but they're getting kind of old. LOVE your suggestion to make them into art stations though...
I'd have to agree, let's take a break on this particular project. All the play kitchens are getting repetitive.
Let's also have a moratorium on owls, trees, wall decals, and nurseries in general. Some people don't like any of those and some people have kids who are too old for nurseries. And yet, we see those on Ohdeedoh quite often.
Then again, some people, like me, really like the play kitchens.
Daffodil, I think you're going to feel pretty silly about posting that you are Sick.To.Death. of play kitchens. That's a pretty dramatic statement for something you could avoid, by, you know, scrolling down.
I am thinking about making one for my daughters though its easy to buy one but I think it would be wonderful as a first woodworking project. Thank you for sharing the inspiration. :)
well, I'm not sick to death of them since I only pop to the site over once in a while so I would say that it is adorable and thank you for posting it!
Keep posting the play kitchens!! They are all fantastic and inspiring.
I like it.
One of the key things I love about this play kitchen is that it uses a piece of furniture that has little hope of another life - as we move away from televisions built for these entertainment centers, this is a great way to re-purpose them and give them a great life as something else. I'd love to see other ideas about re-purposing this type of furniture as well.
Great repurposing project! Man, you could clean out the Salvation Army and sell those things for good bucks on etsy!
you guys are hilarious. I can see how one more play kitchen post might be annoying, but I still love to look at the creative ideas involved in putting one together. You are right though....this TV cabinet could be made into a great art center.
Daffodil, maybe you could whip one up, and post it.
I like these posts about play kitchens. We cannot afford the wood Plan Toys play kitchen (even though I LOVE IT)! But I am trying to see one that may fit something we have already so we can make one for my lil guy. He is two and likes to pretend to cook among otehr things and right now we juts have his play food in a drawer in our kitchen..Come to think of it maybe that would be a good post. A totally free, easy and quick solution is to clean out the bottom drawer of your kitchen cabinet and dedicate to play food and old measuring cups and wooden spoons like we have lol, voila play kitchen!
I love this!! Great find:)
I never grow tired of looking at the play kitchen posts. I love the creativity that goes into them. Great job on this one!
Yeah, let's just ban all ideas because one snippy whiner out there might be sick of them. And then nobody will ever have anything to look at. Great plan.
OR the whiners who are apparently so much smarter than the people posting play kitchens could figure out the carpentry skills and the real estate to do something better! And then post it!
But they probaby won't. Because they are too busy whining.
I love it, by the way. Way to repurpose.
I love this play kitchen! Retail wood play kitchens can be extremely expensive to buy, and I also love the originality of these re-purposed ones. This one is particularly attractive to me because it has the refrigerator, sink, and oven, all in ONE piece! It also looks like they didn't have to use a lot of "extra" wood, or do extensive woodworking for it. Best one I've seen on here!
We made our own play kitchen for our daughter as a result of seeing these posts on ohdeedoh and our daughter LOVES it! And seeing this kitchen and hearing peoples' ideas about creating an art center provide more inspiration for me! Keep em comin ohdeedoh!
I happen to love the play kitchen posts. I just bought the My First Kenmore washer/dryer, stove, fridge, and sink for my daughter so I don't plan on building one but I love to see what others are doing. One post once in awhile isn't going to kill anyone, and it still makes others happy. You don't have to click on it. This particular kitchen is adorable, great job! I'm glad I got to see it. ;)
Keep 'em comin'.
this is great!!
BUT IT MUST BE AWFUL BIG & HEAVY AS HECK
I too LOVE these DIY kitchen posts. They are half the inspiration for the one I am working on now. The other half is from here:
http://outofthecrayonbox.blogspot.com/2009/11/build-with-me-lesson-1-supplies.html
But the kitchen is for my daughter, so Daffodil, if you could find an inexpensive and much smaller used piece of furniture at a great price, I'd love to see how you turn it into a tool bench, for example, as that is what I am making for my son next!
I come to Ohdeeoh expecting DIY nursery's and play kitchens and I am never let down.
a haiku
I love this kitchen;
Inspiration strikes again.
Haters should just scroll.
@SummerDoyle: LOL :)
i love it! it's resourceful and creative and a great way to make something great out of something that would have otherwise gone to the dump. we built an awesome play kitchen that we could've never otherwise afforded, thanks to these posts! keep them coming!
I, personally, LOVE this as my parents have this exact piece in their basement and I'm going to forward this to my Dad. Awesome!
I LOVE IT!!! This is the perfect kitchen (and I'm not sick of looking at them)
Foog Foog is right Salvation Army sells tons of these for cheap. Kids are supposed to use their imaginations, you could really just slap some paint on the cabinet and paint all the appliances on and the kids would have a great time. Put two of the same cabinets together with hinges on one side and on casters on the bottom and you could have a rolling folding playhouse with tons of toy storage. They would be absolutely wonderful for pre-school or kindergarten classrooms.
I love this... and I never get tired of seeing examples of creative transformations!
Not all DIY play kitchens require "carpentry skills" or take up much space.
We built ours from a discarded nightstand. I had all the wood cut by employees at Home Depot (for free) and all I had to do was screw in some wood screws and paint it. Oh, and we did use our neighbors jigsaw to cut a hole...but Home Depot would do that for you too.
I think the final footprint is only 12"x19"
Here's a photo and details
thanks for the post. this looks like something i would find on the curb for free. i havent found any bedside tables yet!!! time to think a little differently. <3 it!
This is a fantastic project. I appreciate and actually search for play kitchen projects here for my 2.5 year-old son. I would like to create a kitchen for him and the projects here help me visualize what I will design for him. Please continue to post play kitchen projects.
I love how they transformed the cabinet to a refrigerator. Clever!
I don't even have kids, but i love these posts. Fantastic re-use of something you could find for free. Another poster mentioned you could easily build a grocery store, or work bench or whatever else is fascinating your kid.
I am sick to death of all of these adorable posts related to children. I also hate puppies, rainbows, and unicorns.
Me too, MammaLew. Please stop posting that cr@p about well designed nurseries as well.
supremely cute!
I was just thinking that another good idea for these things would be a dollhouse....you could paint them, put in different levels and maybe even stairs, etc. The kids could paint the inner walls or make "wallpaper" for them. For boys it could be made into a fire station with a pole going through the levels!
Cute idea kaleo! Never would have thought of it but a piece like this would make a perfect barbie dream house but cooler :)
I don't care how many kitchens we've seen, this one is awesome!
As a note to people who would like to make their own, someday - don't forget to use magnetic paint on the fridge door. Then kids can hang their own drawing on their own fridge door!
I think it's adorable!
I am wildly interested in play kitchens (I have a 15 month old) and this one is FANTASTIC. Haters should scroll (and read haiku).
I'm no where near close to having children. It just isn't the time. That said...I, obviously, stop by ohdeedoh from time to time. The play kitchens are some of my favorite things. I had a big huge plastic thing when I was a kid. I had never even thought of doing something like this. Now it has been filed away in the back of my mind for when I do have kids (and maybe some pictures in a file on my computer) because they are so neat! If you don't like play kitchens...don't read that post. I certainly don't read everything posted here.
I do love the idea of making play kitchen, but as daffodil says, we have seen already too many posts devoted to this subject. I would love to see also posts about art centers for older kids or even rooms of older kids instead of nurseries.
About the wall decals, do we really need to buy any posters when already our homes are overflowing with art by the little ones. It just seems so unnatural, the organized rooms with pretty posters, bedding, book shelves.
I enjoy seeing well-done reuse projects like this, but there have to be more awesome DIY projects out there that aren't play kitchens. It seems like there are so many categories of kids' toys and furniture that someone could inject a little more variety.
That said, this project is great! Very nicely done.
HOLY COW! Good for you! That looks fantastic!
Love it!
One of the cutest yet! I personally love seeing the play kitchens; even though I gave our daughter's kitchen away to make room for an extra counter. Ooo! I can just see the cute kids playing with them while the grown ups cook Thanksgiving dinner!
The haiku by SummerDoyle sure made me smile. Scroll, grinches. Lots of people enjoy the cute kitchens. Even people like me who will never make one will still happily marvel at the cuteness of others' efforts.
Ask any kindergarten teacher about the importance of having a pretend area that includes a kitchen. Your child will be organizing, sorting, planning, and having creative conversations with both real and imaginary friends! All skills that are important to reading and math.
You can get these outdated media cabinets on craigslist for $25 -- or free! But they ARE really heavy.
adorable !
and lol @ SummerDoyle's haiku ! XD
It's weird that I can recall my kiddie dish sets, but not even one play kitchen. I actually like the play kitchen posts, but then I also have a mini tea set from a Klutz book tacked to my work partition :)
this is totally cool. so cute.
awesome- one of the best i've seen!
Daffodill's comment made me take a good hard look at my daughter's play kitchen. I'm so impressed by the diy-from-scratchers out there (GDW)!
Ours is more of a hodgepodge: Play Kitchen
so creative! when my little boy is older i hope i'll be as creative w/play things as people are here on apartment therpy...
Love this!
This playkitchen was my original inspiration for the one I built my daughter. However, I definitely realized that it requires TOO MUCH space! So I downsized and used a nighstand instead. It's amazing what $40 worth of paint, accesories, hardware, plywood can get you.
Check out the two I made if you like this idea but want to make one with a smaller space requirement.
