DIY Beni Ourain Rug

Gorgeous Shiny Things

When what you have is a plain, old rug and what you want is one that costs thousands of dollars, your best option is often a good ol' DIY. That was the case with Danika, who took matters (dye, really) into her own hands to recreate an expensive Moroccan Beni Ourain rug.

Using black RIT dye, salt, a spray bottle, and old cutting boards, Danika of Gorgeous Shiny Things engineered a system for adding dark stripes to her 5-year-old white wool shag rug. (As an alternative to RIT, you could try a dye from a company such as Dharma Trading Co.) Her resourcefulness and the result are impressive, and Danika also has done a follow-up test that shows the dye isn't bleeding.
