Some kids chew on their cribs, some don't. Michelle's son is a chewer and here's her clever solution for protecting the crib and her son: When my son wouldn't stop pulling off the rail protectors on his crib (the ones from IKEA that they have discontinued - sooo unfortunate), we were at our wits end with how to keep them on and keep our little beaver from getting mouth splinters. We tried several solutions that didn't work until we hit on something fantastic.
We used plastic ties that you can get at any hardware or dollar store and just clipped the ends really short. It's cheap, not too obtrusive, and works perfectly. Thought this idea might be useful to other parents dealing with the same issue.
Excellent tip, thanks Michelle! Readers, you can find Michelle at Munch where she writes about cooking for the munchkin in your life.

Cool idea - we have the same rail protectors, but wound up never using them with son #1 because they fell off all the time. Perhaps once son #2 learns to stand up we'll try this.
hey there - we have this: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3190434
its fabric so you can wash it! for some reason our daughter loves chewing on the rough velcro. must feel good on her gums or something.
I don't think they have discontinued the rail protectors. I got some recently. Are you talking about these?

I'm hoping baby #2 isn't as much of a chewer as our first child! It would have been so expensive to buy enough rail protectors to cover the entire crib...so we just dealt with the teeth marks. This is a great idea, though!
AmberM, the rail protectors at IKEA are really reasonable and you only need 3 to cover the whole thing, you can just cut one in half for the sides.
ellsie22, they are discontinued in Canada, they aren't on the website and when I asked at the store that's what they told me. It looks like they are still available in the US, which is great, but maybe not for long? They are inexpensive and we tried a few others and these ones worked the best and were less obvious so it's too bad that they don't have them here anymore.
