It seems that there is no shortage of DIY lamp projects here at unplggd. You've got Bent Ply and Tripods. Ikea spare parts and a little home made shoji Zen. Now we can add some green to that list....in a reduce, reuse, recycle kind of way with the Bidon lamp from R3Project.
What do you need?
- a used translucent plastic container
- a CFL bulb
- a bulb fitting with plug
- a sharp Stanley knife
With some steady handed cutting, you can fit the bulb holder to the cap and get a nice milky white glow from your ceiling, or wall, or table top.

Those would make for cool patio lighting.
cool, but remember that Compact Fluorescent Bulbs contain small amounts of mercury that can be released if the bulb breaks, so perhaps seating isn't the safest place for these bulbs.
Also, CFLs don't do well if the temperature of the base or bulb goes too high. It's recommended that the bulbs fixture be ventilated so I'm not sure whether the bulbs base being outside the container and the bulb itself being entirely enclosed would be a problem. But neat nonetheless.
