scavenged wall sconces highlight handpainted murals from below

Say "tea party" and we start thinking of pastel floral prints, white gloves and that faint musty smell that lingers in antique tablecloths and lacy doilies. So imagine our surprise when we wandered in to the cozy storefront of the Leland Tea Company. No doilies in sight, only fantastic dramatic art-deco details. The place looks renovated to it's original glory but there's a dirty little secret hiding in the details...

Faced with a tight budget but wanting to restore some of the old details of the building, the owners called in friends for help and went renegade with the DIY....

We loved the murals, but our favorite detail was the ceiling. The owner and friends found some authentic-looking paper, glued it up and painted straight over it. Voila....faux-flocked ceilings! And that lovely and simple crown molding detail? That would be foam-core! We love seeing sneaky DIY details in action...
