After the storm last weekend in the Northeast, many parts of the area had no electricity or water. When we went to the store to pick up some bottled water- the aisle was empty except for a few small bottles. This got us thinking we should move this one up on our "to-do" list.
We found this pdf from the government of Canada on Tip Nut, and what we like about it is it's very thorough. Follow through their checklists and put together necessary information as well as your own 72 Hour Emergency Kit. There are so many great tips in here that we wouldn't have thought of on our own.
So, sit down with your family, and go through this now. It's certainly more important than finding the perfect throw pillow or area rug.
Another great resource: Real Simple's Emergency Plan Checklist and their article, How To Prepare for An Emergency.

be sure to include baby necessities in your kit if you have infants...a spare bottle, blanket, diapers & wipes, small toy, maybe even formula & baby food with a spoon. Especially helpful if you run out but can't access the supermarket during an emergency.
sassypiggy is right. things like tampons should also be on the list (icky subject but these things are important). you also might find this link helpful. it's for earthquake preparedness but the list can be applied to all kind of emergencies. it has a more thorough list - pipe wrench to use to turn off water and gas and medical informations are included on the list.

And just think of what MacGyver could do with a tampon and a pipe wrench!
Thank you for bringing up such important topic. I posted this on my blog and linked it back to you.
