Have you tried any wood-burning projects for your handmade gifts this holiday? Wood-burning (or etching) is the art of burning designs onto wood surfaces — and these spoons are a fun and creative way to get started with learning how.

Don't let the art of pyrography intimidate you — etching is easy and safe, so long as you take reasonable precautions with the heated tip of the etcher. You can pick up a set of inexpensive wooden spoons from places like IKEA, Home Goods, or Cost Plus, and a $20 etcher from any crafts store (Dremel makes a popular model for crafting).

Check out this tutorial from Design Mom for designing your own set of etched spoons, and then take the idea further with etched coasters, etched placecards, and even etched cheese boards.
