We love Melinda's colorful loft bedroom (as does Bacon), and it has a good deal to do with the drama. Rich, deep color, luxurious textiles and lovely, low lighting. The key to a great space is knowing where to spend your money — Melinda may have splurged on the duvet cover but she created the subtle glow behind this headboard for less than $7. Follow the jump to see how...

It's rope light! Garish lawn decor for some, sophisticated glowing bedroom effect for others. Tucked neatly out of sight, rope light (or any inexpensive string light) spans the length of your headboard to create a soffit-type light effect. 6 feet for under $7 at any hardware store and usually CVS.

I'd rather see a pair of sidetables with some fabulous lamps...

do tell us, what phase is next? belittling things other people like with an ever-present air of superiority?
I think the glow is quite nice, especially given the hidden light source. thank you for sharing this option of alternative lighting in a bedroom.
a question regarding the lovely duvet: has it been washed? I'm curious to know how the ruching will be affected.
I like it too, it brings a romantic atmosphere.
P.S. i love that London golden cushion.
foodefafa - I'm pretty sure it's the Cirrus duvet, from Anthropologie. Mine washes just fine (I run it on delicate, then tumble dry on low for half a cycle and hang it to dry completely).
My boyfriend has that bedset for sale in SF if anyone is interested ;)
Cute idea though!

I really like your room just the way it is.
Beautiful soft lighting for cheap... yes yes yes! This is fantastic for my tiny bedroom with no room for side tables. This site is my hero.
