We've been lusting after a new bed, but after crunching the numbers we had to accept that it's not in the budget right now.
Fortunately, there are a ton of low-cost DIY headboard projects on Apartment Therapy and all around the Web. For starters, we like this wallpaper headboard from Blueprint. It's minimal, modern, and inexpensive.
Here are 6 more ideas including upholstered, wooden, and paper headboards...

I've been looking at these wall coverings from Inhabit to use as a floor to ceiling headboard:

I'm just concerned about the sturdiness. I wouldn't want to crush them if I lean back on them.
i made mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/megmcg/462433458/in/set-72157594537208023/
just jigsawed out a fun shape and stapled some foam and fabric over it. was done in a night!
Meg, you know I have a jigsaw I got for another project, and it occurs to me that I haven't entirely gotten my money's worth out of it.... Did you just use plywood?
On another note, does anyone know where the lamp in the photo is from? I haven't seen anything like it before.
@lurker2209: I was in the process of researching ways to jazz up my existing headboard, and stumbled on a really great online tutorial of how to make your own headboard. Problem is I can't find it right now. But yes, you do use plywood. Here's an old AT post on building your own headboard. If I'm able to track down that video, I'll definitely post it here.
