Living in a small apartment, sometimes keeping a few things on the floor is unavoidable. Even if you don't live in a small space, its easy to let a stack of magazines or a pile of books make a temporary home off the shelf. It may even seem convenient until it's time to sweep or mop. This easy DIY idea is perfect for sliding a stack of books under a coffee table or storing a pile of magazines near the bed without collecting dust the way they would on the floor.
Anne Lise, of the Norwegian design blog Fargevandring, shows how she created this space saving solution by simply adding wheels to a piece of wood. Painting the wood a bright color makes this an attractive and handy addition to the home.

I have made these all over my house. It never occurred to me that it was a Thing. I sometimes put a box or basket on them to contain stuff. Besides under beds/sofas/tables, they are particularly useful in closets. I'll make three to cover the floor of a standard sized closet. It makes it easy to access the side ones, by just rolling the middle one out first.
One thing to add is that you don't need sides - just a board with wheels. The weight of whatever you put on it is enough to hold things in place.
Great idea. One thing I would add is a cabinet handle on the front edge to make pulling the stuff out a little easier.
If you don't want to wait for the paint to dry, you could cover the wood with fabric. Use ModPodge, fabric glue, or just staple it to the bottom like you're covering a chair seat. This also prevents the problem of magazines or papers sticking to the painted surface, as happens in humid climates.
I think Ikea has featured this idea in their catalog. They showed it with a partially-assembled jigsaw puzzle on it., which I thought was brilliant. Even large houses rarely have space to leave something like that sitting out. Would also work great for legos, perhaps with a shallow rim or even trays on top to hold the loose pieces.
I just re-arranged my livingroom furniture just yesteray and was thinking how to use the storage under certain pieces of furniture without having to remove everything when cleaning. Jeezz...so simply and so affective. It's the simple things that seem to slip my mind...
Off to the hardware store I go.
I adore this. I absolutely adore this, and I'm doing it! I have tons of space underneath my credenza so this will work perfectly!
This falls into the category of: Why Didn't I Think Of This?
It's so amazingly simple, but so many ways to make it work for your space. I, too, love this idea and agree that paint or fabric are both awesome ideas!
Where can I find mini wheels like those shown? I've been wanting to make platforms for my plants, but every wheel I see is clunky-looking, which is why I never bought one of the ready-made platforms. They're invariably ugly.
So simple; so sensible. Looking past the fuschia, I like the idea.
@ JUKESGRRL: Hardware stores sell lots of sizes, including those smaller ones.
Nice...but for those of us too lazy to make stuff like this, a basket (of any material - I have some of basket reeds, some made of leather, or perhaps it is faux-leather, covered box, etc.) works as well....they slide, but don't wheel--so for anything heavy, wheels might be better - though for something heavy, most small wheels leave dent tracks in my pine wood floors - so those plastic furniture sliders they sell in the hardwared store would probably work better with my floors.
I did something similar to this using barn wood and thrifted belts. It's a different style of the same thing and it's TOTALLY handy!
