DIY Idea: Mid-Century Inspired Wall Hung Coat Rack

Time of the Aquarius

Taking inspiration from the classic Hang-It-All coat rack designed by the Eameses in 1953, Minna Jones of the Finnish design blog Time of the Aquarius demonstrates how to make one of your own using inexpensive materials.

Minna went with a sleek all black look, as a fun twist on the playful orbs that are traditionally in an array of bright colors. This project is flexible in that it can be painted in any combination that suits the look of your room.

Minna explains:

The base was a cheap Ikea hanger. (It belonged to the Antonius shelving system, but Ikea doesn´t produce the hanger anymore...) You'll also need solid wood balls, a drill, contact glue and spray paint. Simple and easy, but be careful when you are drilling the holes to these wood balls and use primer first when you paint!

As mentioned, the IKEA Antonius rack is not currently available, but a similar product, the 6-Hook Over Door Rack, is available at the Container Store.
