I don't know about you but I'm longing for summer already. So, to make us all feel better, here's a tutorial you can start planning for this summer. Using drop cloths, Jenny from Anything Pretty has created a canopy that will make any deck look great.
As Jenny describes:
The entire project cost less than $50 and took 2 hours of time. Well worth it for some shade and ambience in my opinion. And even if you do not have a pergola in your backyard, drop cloths could still be used on other structures or even between a couple of poles. Who knew that they could be so multi-functional?
This project is simple, using things you might just have lying around to create an outdoor room that expands your living area. Find out more at Anything Pretty.

Shaw's Original Fir...
i love raw canvas too, but I painter's drop cloth is actually not the same as raw canvas (not as strong and not waterproof). I would go w/ the real stuff for outside!
Looks great! I did something very similar (lights and all) with burlap (you can see it here: http://www.smallfriendly.com/small-friendly/2010/06/pergola-project.html), it's so nice to have shade and ambiance.
I think it's a great way to add shade and create a beautiful outdoor environment. I think we all know people who have those beams running across the top of their patios. Who decided that was a good idea to add those to patios?! At least you have thought of a wonderful, inexpensive and easy solution!
I absolutely love this - the pergola, fabric and lights. Maybe I can recreate this on my balcony...
