Hanging gardens seem to be everywhere these days thanks to Woolly Pockets. If you like the idea of a wall garden, but perhaps want something a bit more colorful this is an adorable alternative. Using terra-cotta pots, this garden can house herbs or flowers. And each pot can easily be brought indoors if needed.

For outdoor spaces that lack a decent yard or for walls that need some decorating, this is great, easy project to add a small garden to your space. Most of us probably have the majority of items needed for this DIY already...painters tape, wood screws, paint or spray paint. With the purchase of some terra-cotta pots (make sure there are drainage holes) and pot hangers, you should have your garden hanging within an afternoon.

Is there a specific name for the hooks used in the photo?
stefb: it looks like they are called "hang-a-pot" and here is the site http://www.hangapot.com/
YES! I'm putting in a stretch of this kind of fence this month or next and am planning to add some hanging planters. Thanks for this timely post!
Great idea - always looking for more ways to enhance my backyard. Wonder if herbs would also be a good idea - Love mint and cilantro!
Thanks for linking back to me!! :) xo

Withandwhere - I recommend using larger pots than the ones shown for mint, as it is like oregano and grows crazy-fast. I bet if you used a large pot (as large as your fence can handle the weight of) for the mint, you could dedicate an entire panel of fence to just mint and make a real statement. ? :)
CassiMo, bad pun!
I want to try something like this in my dining area. I love plants and have zero outdoor space so vertical is the way to go. any suggestions on how to keep them from dripping all over the place?
I'm wondering how much weight these support; my yard doesn't get much sun except on the back fence, so I'd like to try putting tomatoes on the fence.
Withandwhere, mint'll do fine no matter what you do to it; just watch out, because it will try to eat your yard.
the website says that it will support up to 100 pounds, though I think that might be assuming that what you are hanging it from (ie your fence) also supports 100 pounds.
You can also get the pothangers here:

They also provide a video on how to install, etc. Great idea to hang that many pots on a fence, makes me want to try it!
I absolutely ♥ this idea! I think I found my newest weeked project!
I just did this a week or so ago on the horizontal slats of my deck railings. Except instead of the pot hangers, I used stainless steel hose clamps:
http://www.google.com/products?q=hose clamps&hl=en&aq=f
and bits of wire hanger that I hooked into the hose clamps and then shaped to hook over the slats to avoid drilling into them.
Works and looks great! I'm waiting a week for the paint on the pots to cure before I plant my new herb garden.
Cassimo - Thanks- We live in south florida and make a lot of mojitos so mint is a must!
