Metallics, especially gold and bronze, are very now. At this year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair, I spotted lots of covetable shiny things, including a stunning brass coffee table from Iacoli & McAllister that will set you back about 3k. What to do if you love the look, but don't have the cash? You could take a cue from the intrepid DIYers at Style Me Pretty, who used a little elbow grease (and some copper leaf) to make a $30 IKEA side table look like a million bucks.

Beautiful, no? With some copper leaf and marble contact paper, the girls at SMP were able to mimic the look of a much more expensive piece. They simply covered the tabletop with the contact paper, applied the copper leaf to the pieces of the table, and then assembled the whole thing. You can find the full instructions (and more photos) here, and more DIYs and happy house things at Style Me Pretty Living.
