Metal contact paper or shelf liners are fantastic for completely transforming furniture and even appliances. It's also very practical when you need a wipeable surface like a backsplash for the stove or a tabletop free of crayon marks.
Rather than doing away with a piece of furniture, try refurbishing it. It's eco-friendly and easy on your wallet too.

Have you seen appliance art? It's similar to the products listed above, but it's magnetic and really easy to apply to your fridge or dishwasher. Check out the "instant stainless" category (plus, I think the "instant chalkboard" could be fun)

I used metal contact paper to create my kitchen back splash, I cut the sheet into "tiles" then laid them out in a way that the grain of the contact paper picked up light differently.
Brushed Nickel could maybe be purchased here? http://contactpaper.ecrater.com/p/10552553/metal-fx-brushed-nickel-adhesive
They have a faux leather option-

I can't find this shade anywhere- http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50237774/. I could make one with this. I'll let you know how that goes, should I ever actually do it :)
Nice! I've been wanting a metallic finish for the interior of my medicine cabinet.
I just covered 2 ikea lack tables a few weeks ago with the brushed copper paper, and they look awesome. It's surprisingly easy to work with.
I wonder if you could apply this on the bottom side of a glass table?
@jodyjohnson: wouldn't the adhesive be on the wrong side to be to see the metallic finish through the glass?
I tried to use the stainless paper to cover a plain plastic trash can to make it look shmancy, and it was a nightmare. I could not get it to lie straight without wrinkles at all. Did anyone else have this problem? How did you solve it?
@strawberryjam: I know but it would look soooo pretty! Im sure theres an alternative, but its probably not as easy as peel and stick!
Emily, we need pics!!!
Cute, yet it also reminds me of some neighbors I had once who used tin foil for curtains. If you can find a way to make that look chic, gold star.

We would need to see a photo of the trash can but unless it was a square or rectangular can, I suspect it was the curves that threw you off.
The first thing I thought of was my ikea coffee table. Good to hear it went well!
I tried this with Contact paper, not the other brands. I wanted to cover the front dishwasher panel which is removable and is cream on one side and black on the other. I found that product was too difficult to use on such a large surface. It worked great for the microwave -- I just put narrow strips rimming the window to brighten the front and coordinate with the new stainless refrigerator till we can get new matching items. For the dishwasher we ended up getting a sheet of aluminum and cutting it to slide in the front panel slots.
