Just when Kristen thought that her outdoor living space was coming together nicely, Mother Nature threw her a curve ball. Actually, Mother Nature threw a patio umbrella through Kristen's glass tabletop, which certainly put a damper on any outdoor dinner plans! Fortunately, Kristen and her husband were able to turn this setback around by DIYing a live edge tabletop based on a $25,000 inspiration piece.

Kristen and her husband built an easy tabletop using planks and scrap wood. They customized it by cutting out an oval in the center to add a built-in ice bucket. Once the rectangular tabletop was built, Kristen broke out the belt sander and went to work on the edges to get the softer look she craved. After treating the tabletop with a wood conditioner, she stained it to bring out the details of the wood. The final step was three coats of Man O'War marine varnish to waterproof the table for outdoor use.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Nitpicking aside...that is one lovely table which will bring years of enjoyment.
Thanks for the inspiration!
nice work. doing this. thank you.
It's a beautiful outdoor table. I like it better than any glass table it had to replace.
Nice :-)
I'm neighbours with the Live Edge people (true story -- we get firewood from them!) ... They're pretty awesome ... I know a $25,000 table is out of most people's budgets, but it's a super company to support if you do have the means!
Nice!
This is to live edge what laminate covered mdf is to solid wood.
folks... it's was titled DIY live edge. self explanatory!
i think the table is a lovely example of being inspired and using a little elbow grease to create the look/feel that inspired you.
congrats on the table :)
Haters gonna hate. This is a great job on a lovely table. I've been trying to figure out a solution to a similar situation and I like that the DIY softens the lines of the table.
AND it's better than all the list posts lately on AT.
Great table! Love the drink holder in the middle
I just purchased a console/desk-sized walnut slab from a lumber salvage yard for $40. It does have a great live edge... I'm debating how much I want to remove. I love the look of the table pictured. My own inspiration is the Chilton line from Room and Board.
Beautiful table. Is the bucket removable? If not, how do you easily get out the melted ice?
What kind of idiot pays 25k for a table? I think this one is lovely, and much smarter. The soft edges won't snag your clothes or scratch your skin, and you can use the rest of the money to buy, I dunno, a new car or something!
Thank you for the comments. The ice bucket actually has a hole drilled into it with a rubber stopper. That way the melted ice can easily be drained.
Call it whatever you want... we are thrilled with what $65, hard work & some creativity provided for us.
I love this table! It's clever and unique. Nice idea!
