Ashley and Jamin hatched the idea to build a loft that spanned the back of the room with foot-to-foot mattresses. Then they decided to make it for their sons. One heartening piece of this tutorial is Jamin's disclosure that he wasn't raised by a handy dad, but he acquired his carpentry skills on the fly.
