Oooh, really love the second photo, that would look great in my kitchen!
I have 4" window sills so I had an etsy shop custom make me a long, window-length bamboo box for planting succulents/cacti. It wasn't that expensive. Here's a listing for a similar kind of box: http://www.etsy.com/listing/93938818/bamboo-succulents-box-set?ref=pr_shop (not affiliated with the shop)
I love the hanging planters in the second photo. Could you share where they can be purchased?
Yes, what Bcarr said!
I LOVE that first photo! Beautiful color palette and a nice blend between modern and rustic.
We have deep windowsills and haven't tried a window box, but we do have a lovely windowsill garden, filled with mostly succulents. It's one of my favorite nooks in the house! You can see it here: http://www.redlinevintage.com/blogs/the-token/6159738-windowsill-garden-with-vintage-zanesville-pottery
The second photo reminds me of this post on IkeaHackers: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2012/04/bygel-flowers.html
