Confession: I do not own a wire Eames chair, but I do have two Bertoia side chairs which are quite similar in concept. My feelings about these chairs are decidedly mixed - sure, they are elegant and modern and iconic, but on a cold day, those chairs are cold. And it's not for nothing my friends call them "the waffle-butt chairs".
But I think I may have found the perfect solution. Akira Ishikawa's knitted Eames chairs are equal parts beautiful, hilarious, and cuddly. I love how they so perfectly capture the decorating zeitgeist: classic midcentury shapes married with handmade warmth in a way that's creative and a little irreverent.
I'm not much of a knitter, but I may be trying this out. In just one afternoon I could add some color to my dining room - and banish waffle-butt forever.

I love this idea - fun, quirky, easy to do, and is easily removed when you get tired of it!
I saw a friend do something similar using men's silk ties in a variety of colors from local used clothing store.
Looks more like they used crochet to make it look knit. It's much easier to work around the framework with a hook than two needles.
I love the one on the right!
They put a bird on it!
heh ... funny HP Stephanie!
I love this idea and would like to try it on my russell woodard chairs, except i'd be afraid that fluffy yarn wouldn' wear well under use. Maybe hearty ribbon? Thoughts?
Pretty sad editing job - this was on Renest late last week (07-Nov). You could at least link to the original story and comments, let alone the originator of the post (Plain Living).
And, to repeat the comments on the other site, the chairs are crocheted and woven NOT knitted.
hahaha i didn't even notice the bird at first. i must be blocking them out ;)

I love the mens ties idea. Those should be super durable and so much fun! Thanks for sharing that.
what an awesome idea! love this..
Back when I was looking for dining chairs, I considered purchasing these Ikea chairs: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50076304/ and then latch-hooking them with big, bulky yarn. Even though I decided against it in favor of a Thonet-Fauxnet dining chair combo, I still think about doing it to at least one Ikea chair. Just to see what might have been.
