There is something timeless about the most humble of storage options, the roll. I store my woodcarving tools this way and it is always a bit of a thrill to untie the string and roll out the tools in one row before me. It's a physical signal that it is time to focus and start working on another project. The roll can work for just about any group of long objects. Here is a surprisingly easy method for making one that is perfect for colored pencils.
Carla from Small & Friendly came up with this simple but elegant way to store colored pencils. The best part is, no sewing required! By using felt, Carla avoids the need to sew edges and corners and other things that a non-sewer like me would have tons of trouble with. The end result is a handsome and efficient way to keep colored pencils organized. We especially love her idea of combining this with a sketchbook for a perfect gift.

Carla's tutorial, which includes a downloadable pattern, can be found at Small & Friendly.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Brilliant!
CLEVER, CLEVER, CLEVER!
I'll bet this would work for knitting needles too.
Cool. I've been trying to devise a storage solution for my collection of Copic markers. I wonder if this would work for their square shape?
Cute! But that means finding higher quality and longer felt than the stuff they sell at arts & crafts stores. :(
@ Gibbous, I think it would work great you'd just have to fiddle around with the slot size and spacing.
@ Vintagejenta, I got this wool blend felt at Joann's
I have a hundred and thirty-five coloured pencils, and I've been looking for a box for them. I wonder how large this would be if it fit all of mine? Because this is freaking brilliant. Maybe I should make a mini one with about 24 colours for when I'm drawing out side of the home. :)
