Those sleeves are really expensive, which is unnecessary. And just because you have an older PC doesn't mean you need to DIY something for it. There are plenty of options available. And a laptop sleeve is just that - a laptop sleeve. Many of them might be marketed as MacBook sleeves, but as long as the dimensions will fit your laptop, you can put anything in it.
A recommendation would be to visit Bertie's Closet on Etsy:
$40.00 will get you a very cute/nice looking Macbook sleeve: http://www.etsy.com/listing/80036900/macbook-pro-sleeve-13-inch-laptop-cover?ref=pr_shop

(I have no relation to this shop, other than having ordered a kindle sleeve previously)
Thanks for posting the DIY! I have been thinking about trying to make something for awhile now. And it's not that I can't find a laptop sleeve to fit, it's that I have other priorities in my budget and making a sleeve is going to be my only option right now. :)
I crocheted mine out of a super-thick teal yarn -- love it! And I am not super-crafty, either; if I could do it, anybody can.
Yeah, I made a laptop sleeve for my MBP out of 4 pieces of felt. Then, I put it in an oldschool leather briefcase from a thrift shop (the soft-bodied kind, sort of like this), and voila. Laptop case for under 5 dollars.
That's where I got my sleeve too! Great shop.
