If you watch Secrets from a Stylist, you may have seen Orlando Soria design this fantastic "Orb-Lando" light to compliment a homeowner's art collection. Good news: Orlando has posted the easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions on his hilarious and helpful blog.
It will probably take the better part of an afternoon, but it's worth it. The light looks artsy and contemporary and will cost significantly less than a similar light at a store. Plus, you can easily customize the size, making it big for a dining area or smaller for a library nook.

In addition to being good-looking, the galvanized wire light is simple enough for even novice DIYers, which may inspire you to tackle more difficult projects in the future.

Wow. This turned out so amazing. Such a piece of art! Love.
Am I the only one who doesn't get it? Weird wire orb is not a lamp shade.
I thought this was beautiful when I saw it on Secrets from a Stylist but a little too industrial for my space. Rustoleum has me rethinking it though!
That's actually a pretty cool diy - it makes it better than just buying one to me. I'm not particularly keen on these though - I don't really like seeing the bulb, and maybe remind me too much of 70's birdcage/shade frame lamps.
I adore these types of shades and was planning to make similar ones I've seen made from wood veneer strips or string until recently when bought a clear glass pendant shade. Seeing that exposed light bulb through the shade was way too bright. I tried using both clear bulbs, frosted bulbs, lower wattage, etc, but all were still unpleasant to look at if you happened to look straight at the light when it was on.
What types of light bulbs do others use for these types of shades where you can see the bulb? Is there a type of bulb that is not so jarring to look at? Maybe my eyes are just extra-sensitive to bright light? :-(
I love it, and I love Orlando's aesthetic and humor. When is he getting his own show???
I over this in this episode. Orlando and Emily's interactions are just the multiple colored spinkles on the confection that is "Secrets From A Stylist".
I love Secrets from a Stylist.... hee
I saw this episode and I thought this was GENIUS!!!! It was made for a VERY large space (very high ceilings) but I bet you can easily customize the size for your space.
Interesting. I assumed it was string rather than wire. Seems to me you could do the same around a balloon, using yarn and that starch mixture for paper mache. Might be tough to get it perfectly spherical, but there's probably a lot more variety in shapes and infinite yarn colors.
