Remember the animal candleholders project we showed last month? If that wasn't reason enough to hold on to all those little plastic toys, then check out this painted jars project.
Plastic trinkets and a little paint turn ordinary glass jars into a set of unique jars for craft room organization. Just glue the plastic animals to the jar lids and spray paint. Who knew those little plastic toys could look so good?
This idea is in a gallery of playroom storage ideas on House to Home - check it out here.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
This is super cute!
cute! we use glass jars for the same thing. just be careful of glass around little ones :)
Cute!
(But who needs a jar of scissors? Maybe a family with way more kids than mine.)
As much as I love jars, and love real stuff for kids, jars with beads? And scissors and stuff? They'll get dropped, y'all.
These are so cute! And I just recycled a bunch of jars.
Of course they get dropped, but any container of beads could get dropped? It happens. And definitely, multiple scissors. If you have three kids, plus friends, you run out quickly. They're cheap, so why not have a few pairs?
Now that's cute! You could always put them up on shelf away from little hands.
doing this.
Such a cute idea! What sort of glue do you think would work well?
We have all our craft things stored in jars like these already, I'm definitely going to pretty them up using this idea - just brilliant, I love it!
Have 3 kids. Oldest 18. I've learned plastic jars, like peanut butter, some instant coffee, etc. are best. Shards of broken glass aren't worth it. I love the look of the animals, but even gorilla glue won't keep them attached if anyone uses them as, "handles." If you keep everything "up," and handle it all yourself, you could do this, but if the kids have any contact with these, as much as I love the look, the animals will come right off. Glass jars are for teens, and even then, plastic jars prevent accidents. I do love the look. Let's think of other places we can glue plastic animals! I have been hot-glueing them to magnets for the cookie tray-magnet boards my youngest makes. She either spray-paints or uses craft-paper to decorate $ store trays. Any other plastic animal ideas?
Oh, and we have so many scissors, you would be shocked. We keep them in a large Skippy jar, and I still find some in drawers and bedrooms. as the years go by, scissors and art supplies accumulate. And yes, I make an enormous donation to our local women's shelter every 2 months with plenty of children's items. Don't judge, new mommies!
I have a dozen+ pairs of scissors for bad art nights and 3D collage workshops.
Maybe not that practical, but a wonderful idea.
This is such a wonderful idea! I'd probably put my own twist on it though, as I don't have any plastic animals to recycle. But this has given me inspiration to pretty up the jars I use to organize my stuff!
Thanks for sharing this!
Why are people so afraid of glass? Choose tempered glass at the right age and it is fine. Children can be taught to have respect for their toys and handle them properly.
We've been using tempered glass cups and bottles tand storage too and rarely have problems. When we do have problems, it is usually adult error + concrete floors.
Thanks! I'm filing this away for when my son, now three months, can actually engage in crafts. (I will, though, likely be using plastic jars and will be screwing the plastic toys onto the lid.) So fun!
I think these would be fun in the kitchen for grains or pasta storage.
I love the idea of using these up on a kitchen shelf. For kids I think they're just too fragile.
The possibilities are endless.. they don't have to be animals on top and they don't have to be in a kids room.. this is just inspiration to get you thinking. And i'm thinking kitchen..
Seriously, some of you are taking the project and photo quite literally. It's a fun idea for whatever you want to store in jars. And if you are fearing your child's death by scissors, tak'r easy, man. Put some crayons in them and store them in a high place and get the jar down for the kid and then all is well.
I think these are whimsical for adults to use to store their own craft items. Would look LOVELY on open shelving above little one's reach. Obviously, its your responsibility as an adult to decide the appropriate age for handling anything glass. Summed up? Duh.
Peanut butter jars would definitely be best! Just gave my little one a jar to start her own collection in as long as she never brought it into the kitchen. Daddy comes home through the kitchen, she runs to show him, and it immediately shatters. No more of that!
vbrown and musikmama, let's leave out the condescending "Duh" and telling others they are "seriously....taking the photo and project quite literally." We're not in grad school, trying to prove that one of us is smarter than the other; we are moms talking about a craft project involving plastic animals and glass jars. We are all intelligent, and we are all in need of friendship and positive conversation. This is Ohdeedoh, it's supposed to be fun and helpful; let's not be mean-spirited or competitive. There are other places for competition.
I love this idea but also worry about the ability of the glue to hold them on. A wooden block, now, could be screwed on...
LorienQ, I like your thinking! Once you get your hands on a power drill and start thinking about all the options w/ screws, a whole world opens up! That's what I love about this site! I never would have thought of that on my own. Those palm-sized wooden figures from craft stores- thick, unpainted animals, people, boats, etc, would be big enough, too. Around here, they are about 50 cents.
@Karla-I'm simply continuing the discussion and responding to those that feel compelled to criticize the project about the potential dangers when using glass with children. I didn't realize my comment about using common sense was competitive.
I loved the candle holders and I love this. Such a fabulous look!
what a neat idea
I don't have kids or know any but I'm totally doing this. Love it! Now I just need to get some plastic animals!
I posted a DIY blog on a larger and sturdier version!! Check it out!!! These jars are soo fabulous!!!
