We've written about similar doorstops with fairly hefty price tags in the past so we were happy to see this Sailor's knot doorstop tutorial that was recently posted over at Design Sponge. Summer hobby, anyone?
This project will run you about $8 for rope, compared to similar items costing upwards of $40. Sure, there is a little bit of a learning curve, but the end result is pretty rewarding. Check out the full tutorial and see lots of photos of the whole process on Design Sponge.

Shaw's Original Fir...
This is actually a Monkey Fist, not a sailor's knot. Of course to non-mariners I guess all sailor's knots are sailor's knots.
Well, I've seen monkey fists used on boats. So I'd say that makes it a mariner's knot.
My boyfriend makes dog toys from these! Just use a tennis ball as the core! It's not super easy to make a money's fist, though...not a beginner's knot.
Yes, I really need a huge wad of rope to prevent all my heavy books from blowing away!
Wow to HollyCow. You indeed will be getting a large lump of coal this Christmas to keep those heavy books in place. However my roomate is a ship captain and I am sure he is going to love these, I can't wait to make them.
