When Kata shared her fantastic, colorful play kitchen with us we couldn't help but poke around on her blog a bit. Even though it's written in Hungarian, it was quickly apparent that Kata is a fearless DIY'er. It seems every corner of her home has been customized with her projects, including this wall of stripes - shelves and all.

These are just plain floating shelves (Ikea's Lack) made so much more interesting with painted stripes, thick and thin. A simple idea that packs a nice visual punch.
Google translate isn't the best for Hungarian, but luckily Kata takes plenty of photos of her projects so you should have no problem seeing how she's completed this. You can find her post here at Kicsi Haz/Little House. That gorgeous orange, string-like pendant lamp? Yep, she made that, too - find her video showing the process here.
Kata, you're one to watch!

Sprout Side Table
Does anyone know what she's soaking the yarn/string in, or what would work to come up with a similar result?
Karen B: She uses wallpaper glue.
Hi Girls,
The how to method is the followning:
1. fisrt, I sanded the shelves very deeply
2. applied a base coat
3. painted the shelves in white
5. let the paint dry
6. I mesured the place of the stripes carefully (I painted the walls too, so it is NOT wallpaper), and I used masking tape to mark the place of the stripes.
7. I painted each stripes, applied two coats of paint for them
8. let the paint dry
9. finally I cleared away the masking tape.
10. fixed the shelves, exactly to the stripes on the walls.
I used fabric starch for the yarn pendant.
I used Stiffy for the pendant. There are instructions over at ReadyMade (magazine) site.
Love the pendant too. It's so funny that IKEA table and chairs is everywhere!
