We blogged about the concept of upside down lamps as pendants before in this good question about the installation at S Bar in Los Angeles, designed by Philippe Starck — but this is the first time we've seen a DIY version.
Dan and Laura did a fantastic job and their post about the installation process is super detailed - it will be enough to inspire you to give it a try...or depending on your DIY confidence level, scare you off completely!

Hmm... I kind of like this. I wish we could see the view from directly below, though.
There was a gorgeous Kelly Wearstler room that did this with a pair of vintage lamps over bedside tables. I have been looking for the right lamps ever since.
Disclaimer: I rarely like Wearstler rooms, but you can always find great ideas in them. The word "edit" isn't in her vocabulary... ~:o)
I've been looking to do something like this in my living room, but haven't been able to find a really lovely, large lampshade. Anyone have any ideas of where to look? I'd like to have one that's a color.
lamps are nice but i love that french cafe door!
What? Those look so weird.
I think this looks pretty dorky.
True. Dorkfest.
They used to do this all the time on Trading Spaces.
The shape of those bases are a too phallic for me. Can't get past that.
um, I don't think so.
seen this done before, but it works best when they are less obviously table lamps
AbraCat - I will be working on some vellum covers to the tops of the shades. Then I will post some pictures from under the lamps.
Eiblock- You wouldn't BELIEVE the size of the lampshade I just found at Savers the other day. I plan on covering it with hemp twine and hanging it.
Alice G - you are too funny. From the angle I typically view the lamps, I hadn't noticed the strong phallic resemblance but am now hoping it won't be all I see! ;-)
I love that these lamps evoke such strong emotions, whether they are positive or negative!
It looks exactly like it is, an upside down lamp. I'm not a fan.
