We talked earlier this month about washing your hands with toilet water, or rather washing with the water that will be filling your toilet tank anyway. When talking about it, we never really considered a DIY possibility, but this Instructables maker sure did!
Instructables user Canida put together this great little set up for reducing water in their bathroom. Although the looks might not be as polished as the ceramic retail versions, we're guessing you could jazz up your own final product with relative ease. Once sealed you could paint, stain, woodburn, even glue small plastic ninjas to it if you so desire.
Even if this isn't an undertaking we'll be running to the hardware store to create, we're still glad this DIY option exists for those who aren't into paying $100 bucks for a new toilet tank lid. Frugality brings out the MacGyver in the best of us!

If you had the right drill bit, you could hack a regular toilet tank cover like this, right? (One that works on porcelain.) That would "save" you from having to dress up particle board... just a thought.
That would be a most excellent observation! Indeed you could!
Holy crap, its a little red-neck for my taste
@labchick: the article talks about nicing it up. Nobody says it has to be particle board. Mosaic-tile it, paint little hipster owls on it, put a square IKEA-style lip on it, whatever. I think it's awesome (at least for summer -- I wouldn't wash my hands in cold in winter).
The "sink" part is surprisingly pretty, so all they would have to do is some nice tiling/mosaic to make it look like an intentional built-in feature.
This I will definitely do. Great idea!
