Going on a trip for Spring break and in need of something to keep the kids occupied? How about a portable set of watercolors that you can make. I know, watercolors aren't something the kids can easily use on a plane. But this DIY set is different.
Nicole of One Golden Apple created this watercolor set using a metal tin, polymer clay, tubes of watercolors, coloring tools (she used Fantastix), and white metal paint. You can use these without cups of water standing by, perfect when the kids are in transit. For Nicole's detailed instructions on how to make a set for your own kids, check out her blog One Golden Apple.

Um... Is white metal paint non-toxic? Does it wash out of clothes?
I think the white metal paint was to paint the container, not given to the kid directly. Besides, there are huge age ranges - you wouldn't give a toddler paint that's not non-toxic, but you probably wouldn't give them watercolours on plane - washable or not, you'd take the child-hating passenger-types to a new level if your kid painted on them.
The tutorial explains the paint is to paint the tin so you have a white background for mixing. And the paint is dried out, so the child uses the pens to wet them a bit. Doesn't sound too messy! I may have to see if I can get to the craft store tomorrow to get the supplies for this as we are traveling over easter... Lovely tutorial.
