Really cool idea and I'm going to try this if I ever come across a 'cork' wine stopper. I've found that most are now made of some sort of plastic. :o(

VSD, I'm thinking those plastic wine stoppers will make an even sharper image than natural cork. You should attempt it. (Be careful cutting!)
You can use an eraser too.
You can even carve into slices of potato. Obviously, you can't keep it for future use, but it works.
