Hula hoops--you either can make them effortlessly swivel around your hips or you cannot. If you fall into the cannot camp, here is a project that will finally make some use out of that simple plastic circle that taunts your lack of skill. And you'll end up with a very cool piece of homemade decor to boot.
Is it a rug or a wall hanging? Even Anne at flax and twine had a hard time deciding the ultimate fate of this beautiful piece of homemade art. The materials needed are pretty simple: a hula hoop for the outer frame and some ripped-up t-shirts for the spokes. The only other thing required is a large ball of finger-knitted yarn (this is yarn that has sort of been woven into thicker strands by wrapping it around your fingers--check out Anne's finger-knitting tutorial for all of the details). It helps to have some willing helpers on hand as well.
The end result is a one-of-a-kind circular rug or wall hanging. Anne heartily recommends involving your kids in this project, particularly in the finger-knitting stage. Nicely done, Anne!
