As the temperatures around the country are starting to rise, the need for cool is slowly creeping in. Sitting in a home office or pent up in a cubicle can equal stale sweaty air. Instead of spending hours searching for one that doesn't take up too much space, just make your own from a power supply fan!
Over at The Findings of Guus Oosterbaan, he took a few minutes and ripped out all the non-essential parts of a power supply fan, plugged it in and has been enjoying the breeze ever since. This fan is simple, takes up hardly any space and has as little or as much power as you want depending on the model you pick up at the parts store (or salvage from an old parts dinosaur you have stashed away).
Make sure you hop over to his blog and check out his other concepts and prototypes, all of which we hope to be seeing in production sooner rather than later.

Cool idea, I don't like the idea of taking apart a power supply just for a fun. Even if it is an older not in use one, you should read the labels before you open it and start taking that stuff apart, I believe it talks about warnings and such :P. Plus wouldn't in use a lot of electricity?
Looks like a good way to get electrocuted. Those fans also tend to be noisy, except in the more recent models.
Just to be clear:
My project (on my own blog) doesn't suggest being a DIY project. I'm happy for the positive article on Unplggd, but I'm afraid that Gizmodo didn't read my post that well before writing their article, which is disappointing for a website that big.
- I replaced the power supply inside the fan so it matches only the power to make the fan turn around (so no waste of energy)
- It is not noisy
- If you know what you are doing, it is not dangerous at all, the labels are there to keep people away that don't know what they are doing.
Cheers
Guus
Thanks for the clarifications Guus, much appreciated!
